Afternoon folks ...... I'm just traveling home from a trip to London the last chance to use my current kit before its all advertised tomorrow ... Currently a D5200, Nikon 18-55, Nikon 16-85, Nikon 70-300, Nikon 35mm 1.8 and a Tokina 11-16

Anyway I'm upgrading to the Nikon D750 and my planned lenses are the Nikon 16-35 f4, Nikon 24-120 f4, keep my Nikon 70-300, and a Samyang 14mm
Basically I want to cover the same focal lengths with my new kit just better quality the only thing I'd be missing would be a wide fat lens which is where the Samyang comes in now I know some people hate it but I've saw some fantastic images with it!!

My main photography is Landscapes (Nikon 16-35) and Astro (Samyang 14mm), the Nikon 24-120 would cover a walkabout lens and the Nikon 70-300VR Which I'm keeping will do as I rarely use it now never mind upgrading it

So the big question..... Is there anything in that kit list you'd change and why?????

Sounds to me like you have most things covered, the only thing I would say is not much in the 'fast' lens category, but depends if you ever shoot like that as to whether you'd need them.
 
I have a similar Nikon kit but I have the Sigma 12-24 zoom rather than the 16-35 and 14mm prime. I also have a couple of primes for specific uses - a 50mm f/1.8 for very low light, an 8mm fisheye for erm... fisheye shots(!) and a 105mm macro for macro. Built up over a number of years as a film user before switching to digital so I never built up a collection of Dx lenses, avoiding the expense of upgrading.
I did have a pair of Sigma f/2.8 zooms, the 24-70-200 combo but very rarely needed the extra speed over the slower 24-120 which I have now or wanted the extra shallow DoF that a wide aperture allows. Also had a 150-500 Sigma but moved it on since its weight meant it stayed at home more than was sensible or justifiable!

I really like it, I replied to someone a couple of days ago with a more indepth reply which would come up in my previous posts - I basically did a quick summary on it's performance in terms of sharpness, distortion etc :-)
 
Throwing in a slight curve ball but are you not tempted to swap the samyang 14 and 16-35 for a single 14-24 2.8? You'd get the fast ultra wide then without needing two lenses for similar jobs. I don't know how new prices compare but it looks like those two bought used add up to about the same as a used 14-24. Using filters is an issue but not something that would trouble me personally.
 
I'd get a 50mm f/1.8G for lower light situations, apart from that you look good to go. I would get the Samyang and 16-35 ahead of the 14-24 purely because filters are important to me for landscapes and the 14-24 is a pain for filters. The newer 18-35 might also be worth looking at.
 
D750 is FF...
 
As others have said I couldn't live without a fast 35-50mm fast prime other than that I like your line up.

I thought the 14mm was fantastic for astro (northern lights) but far to wide for 99% of landscape stuff I shoot.

I've got 2 different Tripods and monopod so that's sorted and the intervalometers on the list

14-24 is no good as I use filters ..... the Lee kit so hoping to keep that once moved FF thanks for the suggestion

once I'm happy I've got my starting FF kit a 50mm prime could be on the cards but I had the 35mm prime for my d5200 and used it once.

really looking forward to the 14mm Samyang now though literally for astro/ Northern lights work

I have a very similar line up of lens and would say you have most eventualities covered.
I sold my Holy trinity and only missed the long lens VR 70-200mm f2.8. Which I replaced with a s/h one off here. and I already had the ultra wide end covered with my Nikon 16mm fisheye and AFD 14mm prime.
But I would stick with your 70-300 VR tbh and the other lens will serve you well.

Oh and to your earlier question yes the 16-35mm f4 VR is as good as they say.

Intervalometer wise, look at all the options. Definitely don't spend money on a first-party one since they are ridiculously expensive and do the same thing as the cheapest chinese third-party knock off.

A USB connection to your smarthone also works with some apps, depending on camera.
If your body is wifi enabled there might be a wireless option with a phone app too. But this will drain both batteries real quick.

Some newer bodies FINALLY have the intervalometer option built in. How silly it was to wait this long for this feature.

The wireless third-party intervalometer option is also nice since it eliminates shake in all situations.

A wired intervalometer is nice and does a perfect job, and I guess you can get a fully fledged one for real cheap from china, one extra wire just bothers me sometimes, but that's just me and my life being full of cable. Maybe you'll be OK with it. I suppose this is the best option for REALLY long takes due to longest battery life.

Thanks the 70-300vr is rarely on the camera as it is so I really cant justify upgrading to a better one when I don't use that one and for what ive used it for its been more than sharp enough

yeah the D750 has wi-fi so I could use my phone but I like to have a cable connected to the camera even if its a basic shutter release I just trust it more and if I drop that its only a few £ to replace and iPhone is slightly more ha
 
Yes like I said I think what you have with the 70-300mm VR and your proposed purchases your covered if anything I might look for a s/h 15 or 16mm fisheye lens as a Alternate lens to the 14mm Samyang I've used my fisheye for astro photography and these days you can de-fish with software if you don't like the effects you get from it.
