I asked advice from members concerning supports for low-level shooting.

I took Justin's advice and ordered a Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom with Ball Head.
What a fabulous piece of kit.
Beautifully made, a lot of well designed details and SO STURY I feel it would almost take my weight.
Even with the camera as low as 4" to the ground it still maintains it's stability.
I'm never really 'staggered' by a piece of kit but I am by this.
For details click the Adobe link here.
