I took Justin's advice and ordered a Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom with Ball Head.

What a fabulous piece of kit.
Beautifully made, a lot of well designed details and SO STURY I feel it would almost take my weight.

Even with the camera as low as 4" to the ground it still maintains it's stability.

I'm never really 'staggered' by a piece of kit but I am by this.

Bought these when I bought my D5000. It's brilliant. Have tried all sorts of places to wrap the lesg round - tree branches, fencepost rails, gates. Beats lugging a heavier tripod round and can be a lot quicker to set up.
 
I picked one of these tripods up for a fiver from the market not long ago.. will definitely need to add a ball head to it at some point though!

How sturdy is it. Is there any movement when you press the shutter release? Would a remote release be needed?

I don't think ANY tripod/ballhead is that sturdy.

The shutter button if off centre by about 70mm there's bound to be movement.

I intend to use a remote or the self-timer as I would when using the sturdiest of tripods.
