XP Internet Security Alerts - what's going on ?

Hi there.

Came home tonight to balloons popping up from my security centre saying XP INTERNET SECURITY ALERT.

Your PC activity is being monitored
Tracking Software Detected
Infection Detected in Background
Run Security Scan

I ran my Norton full scan which didn't detect anything and all updates are OK

I ran CCleaner which found and fixed a few minor issues.

I ran Advanced Windows Care and again nothing special came up.

Now I'm still getting the message INTERNET SECURITY ALERT

attacck from 9.9.77.72 port 2048
attack port 11648
threat decices 2000

The XP security centre is asking if I want to block this attack but if I press yes it takes me to a screen to activate XP Internet Security or stay unprotected. To activate is $69.

Anyway - The PC seems fine and all my normal checks show nothing.

Are these messages important ?

and if not how do i get rid of them ?

Apologies for if this all sounds a bit vague but it's doing my head in :bonk:
 
In my Windows Security Centre it now says

Firewall - off (it's normally on)
Windows Updates - on
Virus Protection - off (it's normally on)
 
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, just did a system restore and it went away

Perhaps should have opted for quick scan as there's a purchase now option at the foot of the box which leads me to suspect it's going to find heaps to fix and then ask me to buy it ?
 
Ditch Norton too, it's crap and full of holes. FSecure or Karpinsky and the like are way better imo.

No its free - the paid version adds realtime protection and other stuff,

You won`t have to buy it, if it finds anything let it repair it, I use it all the time, a tool worth keeping on your computer, always update it before useing it.

Well I'm not sure what did it but for some reason everything in the 'security center' was off - it's usually on.

Went into control panel - administrative tools - services and tried to start them up again but they wouldn't.

No idea if the problem that came in knocked it out or whether it came in because they were off ????

Manually ran anti virus
Ran CCleaner
Ran Advanced Windows Care
Ran Spybot

These found a few bits and bobs - rebooted - still no joy

Downloaded Malwarebytes - ran a full scan (3 1/2 hrs) which found a few other problems (have the results log file) rebooted and the whole security centre fired up 'on' on the restart.

None the wiser really but it all seems fine now. In fact it's super fast.
 
Recently there has been an increase in phoney websites set up that prompt anyone visiting them that they have a virus. They then inform the visitor that they need to download a program to clean the virus off.

Please DO NOT download anything from these websites, they are trying to trick you into downloading malicious software.

Two recent examples of this include the “Antivirus 2010” fake anti-virus package and sites which work by planting rumours of viruses on Facebook, the user then goes off and Googles for more information which then leads them to a “you have a virus” page described above.
 
I had this problem recently and purchased StopZilla (www.STOPzilla.com) which successfully removed this nasty scamware.

I tried several of the free malware scanners and they did not work.
 
We get this all the time at work and a combination of Malwarebytes and Combofix never fails to shift them. Thankfully the days of viruses hosing entire networks are gone now, but these just take up time and be annoying more than anything else.

indeed. these days malware is more focused on getting your cash/details than destroying your machine. even then we only get the odd notification every now and again and more often than not its the reps machines that have issues (read into that what you want :lol: )
