I have set up the old PC on the DD room, so they can do schoolwork etc on it. I have played DVD's on it in the past, but hard drvive has been formatted since then.

It runs on XP, and Media player will play the images from a DVD, but no sound. I think I need to get either a better DVD viewer, or some sound software to enable the sound.

Any ideas where I can get this for free. Can buy from Microsft for a tenner, but didn't fancy it as there is no guarantee it will work.

THanks,

Lawrie

Lawrie, try downloading a trial of something like Cyberlink PowerDVD and install that... then try in media player... see if that cures it.

It doesn't sound like you need a new program, its just sounds like a codec problem to me - try http://www.free-codecs.com/ and see if any of the codec plugins solve your problem. I found that certain 'ripped' DVDs wouldn't play on mine ages ago, so I installed 1 codec pack, and then it worked fine!!

the drivers for your sound card will be missing,,,, either manually update them, or go to device manager and perform an auto update on the individual missing drivers.

to get to device manager,,,, on xp...
start/my comp icon/ right click on this comp icon, select properties. within the next menu select hardware, then device manager, here you will see all... anything with a yellow X, is missing drivers. right click on your missing drivers then select update.

or download the free vlc player, this plays anything.......... but if your drivers are awol, you will still need to replace them.

I wasn't suggesting a new program, but installing the trial will install a valid DVD codec that WMPlayer will use.

Thanks guys, will let you know

OOoh, I do get souunds from I tunes, so does that sound more like CODEC than drivers?

Updated the version of media player and downloaded and installed new codec. New drivers as well. Still Nothing.

I will try and download a new media plasyer type programme, but havn't had over an hour to wait for it to do it yet.

bump

If your getting some sounds but not other than try the fix I posted, its likely you have broken/conflicting codecs

agree on the codecs front.....or what program are you using for dvd playback, know this sounds daft....but.......have you checked the volume control is up?

I have tried the XP codec pack from free=codecs .com. I am using msoft media player. It willplay media files, itunes will play songs, t'internet will play sound, just absoleutely nothing from the dvd player.

Is it possible a cable could have have come out the back of the drive?

Or is there something more obvious? And yes, I do have the sound up!

Dowloaded VLC, which plays both pictures and sounds fine. Still no sound on window media player though.................

Problem solved though, they can watch DVD's.

THanks everyone for your help.
