Hi everyone I go to Whipsnade Zoo to take photos :), I read on their website that 'You have to ask permission to take photos for commercial purposes.' Has anyone asked the Zoo permission to take photos for commercial purposes? Whats the best way to ask? Sorry for asking a stupid question lol. Any advice, much appreciated, thanks :)

Are you looking to sell the photos? In which case I would think they would ask for a fee (Although they would probably call it a donation. ;)). Check out their website for contact details and give them a call.

I'd think you'd need a formal written agreement for any commercial undertaking.

Hi Thanks for the reply, if I get nice pictures at the Zoo, I'd want to sell the photos on my website and at a local restaurant (I display some of my photos at a local restaurant), thanks for the advice, really appreciate it :)

Hi Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it, is commercial photography putting your photos on your website and selling them at a local restaurant? Sorry for asking a stupid question lol, did some research on commercial photography, there was information on 'Brochures, marketing and stuff like that.' but couldn't find the answer I was looking for lol :)

Do you make money from this though? Technically if you don't it's not "commercial"?

Of course, they could argue that the Restaurant is using the images "commercially" to attract customers, and your website the same, but in my opinion, it's unlikely.

The only way you are going to get the actual answer is to ask the Zoo - be honest and tell them what they will be used for, then you'll get official answer...

They do this at Monkey World, where we went to try out a new lens a few weeks ago.

I hadn't noticed this sort of thing before, but it makes sense. These places cost a lot to run and no reason why they shouldn't get something out of it is somebody is making money out of them.

I certainly wouldn't begrudge them a donation towards costs.

I didn't realise this. Best check with my local zoo!! I take a lot of zoo photos, and have been approached by a lot of people, mainly other zoos in th US!! However, they have all fallen through for one reason or another, usually money!! Coincidently,my last approach was for a bird in flight shot from Whipsnade :suspect: Anyone know what the likely fee from the zoo would be?

Hi Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it, what you're saying about the zoo costing alot of money to run makes sense, I'd be happy to pay them a donation towards the Zoo cos it helps the animals :)

ZSL, who own and operate Whipsnade, have a form to fill in but they don't have a list of fees.

You can find it through here

http://www.zsl.org/info/corporate/commercial-filming-photography-and-unit-base-car-parking,579,AR.html

My guess is that mostly this is about controlling access and risk, rather than fees for individuals who want to sell a few pics. Try talking to them and see what they say.
