    First time shooting track cycling!

A nice set of shots. 1, 4, 9 are good. Particularly like 4. Interesting comment about authentic look. Personally I think authentic looks are over rated, given your eye fills in so much of the detail that the camera misses! One thing these pics show, is how well a 1D 2N holds up given its...

    Milltown to Moors Half Marathon

Gaz, Firstly, the pics look fine, and I would guess look just as good as the "professionals". I like 2 because of the slant makes it more interesting (but others will disagree). Secondly, the world of an event photographer is a strange one! Seeing 3 on the finish line is not unusual...

    The Rake Hill Climb

They tend to be manic events, especially on the narrow lanes. You can get some great facial expressions and atmosphere though. I did the Urban Hill Climb last year

Sk66, Oops, I misread and ignored the emphasis on longer focal length!! Fair point.

Do you mean deeper DoF, not shallower? DoF will grow as the smallest aperture goes up from f/2.8 to say f/5.6. Personally I wouldn't advise using a 2x converter. The 1.4 converter is design to minimise the loss of F stops.

Kipax, Fair enough, probably didn't think that through. Said I didn't do football!!

Carlo, You have every right to be pleased with that shot. There is a lot that is good about it, reasonably background, blurred by tight DoF, good focus, frozen by nice fast shutter speed, and some drama. So the fundamentals are good. Personally I would crop out the right hand player...

3 Peaks Cyclo Cross B&W descent

Andy, It's a lovely image, but I would have hoped to see something that spoke of "3 peaks", though I suspect you have plenty of context in your other images.

Hope you've got that out of your system!

    Wakefest by Ripcurl

Hi, Well firstly these images demonstrate that you can take a decent photo. They are generally well exposed and sharp. Good start. However there are other issues you might like to consider: 1. Can we see the faces? Of the 10 images I can only see 2 faces. Now I'm sure it's not easy to...

    Tour of Britain -Time Trial

Good quality images. It's always difficult to make Time Trial images interesting. Most of the time you end up with an image of a guy on a bike in the middle of frame, with little context or drama. Image 3 is good because it gives some context and drama. 1 & 2 are good quality but 4 to 6 are...

    BDS #5

I agree with Chimper, 1 is great (for me the best). Usually the tape is a pain but the processing and nice lines have turned it into a feature. Actually quite clever!

    Tees Barrage White Water Centre

Actual Tony, it looks like I was looking at your pics on a duff monitor. I think the exposure is fine, apologies. I appreciate your comments about sun position etc, as you say, there is only so much you can control. When I do the major events I spend a lot of time working out the best...

    Tees Barrage White Water Centre

Certainly Tony. Firstly, focus and images are sharp, suggesting shutter speed is nice and high. However they are overexposed, and I'm not keen on the processing (hence the caramel comment!). What f stop are you at? Try getting as high as possible (f/2.8) to isolate the athlete from the...
