    Beautiful Sophie from friday's shoot

In my defence - there is No blurring done on the skin! this is uploaded as an 800 pixel image, the originall tiff has all texture/pores visible. Maybe you are referring to the matte look? That is just a style I sometimes use where I feel appropriate. Thank you to all who commented :-)

    Retouch before and after

Hi again, it's been a while! I would be interested in your comments about this portrait retouching. I did not use any "quick fix" blurring techniques, there is NO blurring at all. It was done with 3 hours of healing and dodging & burning. I dont know if you can tell at lower res, but all...

    Not again!

ok, I was playing devil's advocate a little there and expected the case for film to be put forward with passion, but at the same time i genuinely wondered what was to be gained. However, I think your explanations are entirely valid and i fully accept there is a mystery and magic in the process...

    Not again!

Please excuse my ignorance, but why would anybody want to use film? What does it do that digital doesn't do better? dave

    Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Hi Chris, I'll start things off with the first two. Number one. You've separated the subject from the background well, using a narrow depth of field. For a stronger composition, you could have placed the meerkat off centre, because he's looking to the right there needs to be more space on...

2 from last holiday - Corfe Castle

Hi Steve, i think the first one is very good, well composed & exposed and i also think the wide format helps. The second one looks very dark on my (calibrated) monitor, there seems to be lots of detail lost in the shadows. Again, the composition is strong, but maybe another edit to recover the...

which would you buy sigma 10-20mm f3.5 or the canon 10-22mm?

Hello, I can't speak for the canon, but I own the sigma and find it excellent. With my 40d it resolves LOTS of detail and I often print to A1 size. I have posted several photos recently using this lens if you care to have a look. The price for the older (slower) lens is now very competitive...

    Should i switch from 40d to 550d?

Interesting, I kind of knew it wasn't a good move but the spec was very tempting and obviously for some people it worked out ok. I was surprised to hear the 60D 'will be just as bad' What does that say about Canon if two generations (40D -50D - 60D) don't make an upgrade worthwhile? I...
