Beginning some "studio" work. Equipment ETC..

Hi Studio Work. The best advice I can give you apart from practice, practice, practice is to join your local camera club. There you'll meet lots of like minded people ranging from complete beginners to experts. They usually have lots of learning opportunities, there will be people there who've...

One of my staff has been offered a job at Venture

I would love to be in the position of being able to offer her the same as Venture but I'm not at the moment. Not making enough to pay myself yet. :( It will come but I suspect not soon enough for her. I want to know if I will be sending her to a good employer. I don't want her to be unhappy.

One of my staff has been offered a job at Venture

My lovely part time photographer has been offered a job at Venture. She went for a part time job that they advertised for admin and they've offered her a full time job as a photographer. She has worked for me 18 months part time and I can't offer her a full time job yet. She passed her exams...

    Backgrounds

The lastolite highlight is really good. it's not the cheapest of options but it's really portable and you can get great studio effects with it.

Newbie - Background backdrop lighting issue - Help needed.

30th of a second is pretty slow. I know you've got your camera on a tripod so that will eliminate camera shake but if the subject moves only a little you're going to get blur. You could try F2.8 and try to blur the background more but it might be too shallow for several people. The last photo...

I can second Garry's recommendation for the Lencarta system. I use them in my studio with a softbox on one and a thing (I've forgotten what it's called :) ) on the one at the back to spread the light on the backdrop and to stop it spilling back on the subject. Works well.

You're going to need some sort of studio flash or off camera speedlight and probably at least two. By the way, my daughter has taken a very succesful photograph of 13 gymnasts in front of a lastolite! She's a master at posing though. :) It's pretty easy to get more than 4 people standing in...

Yes they can be quite pricy but I got mine secondhand so it's possible you could get one too.

    Group Portraits

It's difficult to say for certain what pose you should use. It rather depends on the people and the available 'props' i.e. There is a brilliant enormous log at one of the venues I use for location shoots. I get some sitting on it. Some standing by it. Kids walking along it behind the sitting...

You might want to consider getting a lastolite highlight if you're stuck for space. You can light it perfectly with two lights. One at the front and one inside the side of the lastolite. I have one and used it in my front bedroom studio a few years ago with really good results. I have a smallish...

    Group Portraits

Outside it is then. :) Pop up flash isn't going to help much. Best type of weather is bright with cloud cover later in the day. Don't try to do it at midday with bright sunshine. They'll have panda eyes. Best to try to go for natural shots, not too posed. Have a wide angled lens and a zoom on...
