A local shop has the G12 on sale for £250 this month. The same shop wants £499 for the Sony :(

It's more than twice the price of a G12. If I wanted to spend that much money, I would rather spend a tad more and get the Sony NEX-6 which sounds VERY promising.

You wont regret it. The first lens I got for my 550D was the 55-250, and I was very pleased with the IQ. AF speed isn't too impressive, and it's a bit noisy when zooming\focusing, but overall, you'd be hard pressed to find something better in that reach on a low budget.

I've got to agree with Graham here. When I got my 550D, which was my first DSLR, I went into a shop, said that I'd ordered the 550D with a mem card and carry case off the net for this and that price (which was the truth). I told them that if they could match that price, I'd buy it off of them...

I don't see how it's pointless. There'll always be people who haven't got a DSLR yet, and for those potential customers, the D7k would be an excellent tool to start with. Granted, I'd rather buy a D90 if it was me, as it's almost as good but at a much cheaper cost.

Some PP could make the image much better. Some extra sharpness and added contrast would spark some life into the pic.
