    Which lens for 60D / 7D?

I'll second the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 on a 7D. Exactly what I shoot with the majority of the time, and pretty much the same general usage as you've listed. I paid around £200 for my non-VC version used. Just love it, very sharp, nice and fast, zoom range is perfect for a walkabout.

Why has my camera done this?

It may still be the card or have happened in camera - the Explorer preview will almost certainly be showing the embedded jpeg preview, which is generated by the camera and embedded in the raw when you take the photo.

    Photo cropping problem...I'm baffled!

If it's not a hardware problem (and sounds like it might be), you might have inadvertently activated some accessibility settings on windows - they can do very strange things to mouse clicks. Check Control Panel/Mouse, make sure ClickLock is off. Then open Accessibility Options/Mouse, and make...

    Official Olympic Torch route thread

Nottingham last Thursday (June 28th). Torchbearer before the ice center, and then a different one coming out. Also got a shot of one of the outriders (motorised), giving a helping hand to an outrider (pedal) up a hill. He was literally pushing him up the hill at about 3mph. Any bikers...

What is wrong with me - cant stop buying!

I bought a 7D about 4 months ago, having owned a 550D for a year. Despite numerous outings, the wife has not noticed, despite the top LCD, wheels on the back, etc etc. Surprised me, I have to say. That said, I've not sold the 550D yet - I have to wait for her to be out so I can photo it and...

    7D on the way :)

I found this post extremely helpful when I got mine: http://www.deepgreenphotography.com/2009/12/setting-up-your-new-canon-7d/

The create a photographic record of the Olympic Flame journey thread

I'm going to try and get it in Nottingham either June 28th or 29th. Opportunity to get the Bigma out. Don't know if I'll be told off for using a monopod, but might take one along as well, for a bit of long range stability.

    LR3 vs LR4

That bit is incorrect, but it is correct to say it does not work on XP. You'll need Vista or Windows 7. 32 OR 64 bit version. As to the original question, I've recently gone from LR3 to LR4. While the difference is fairly small, I'd go with 4 no question. Not really used the major new things...

Lightroom 3 soft and bright ?

If you're only in the Import dialog I don't think Lightroom will have applied any settings at all - it will be using the preview stored in the raw file (created by the camera). I could be wrong . When you load in PS it will almost certainly generate it's own preview (what Lightroom...

    CF card reader question

Your CF card is almost certainly UDMA, which a reader needs to support. If you google "UDMA card reader" you should find plenty of reasonably cheap ones that work. You need to know if you've got USB 2 or 3 on your PC as many readers these days are USB 3.

    Processing RAW images

I've have the Martin Evening book and the Scott Kelby Lightroom 3 book, and I have to say I prefer the Kelby. But it really depends what style you like - Kelby walks you through a workflow, and has some Kelby "humour"; Evening is more reference type. Either would do you very well I would say.

    Shooting in RAW?

Cliff - you may not be aware, but last July Microsoft released a codec pack for windows that means you can view RAW directly in Explorer just like any other picture file format. Works fine for CR2 files off my Canon anyway, and the list of supported formats is pretty decent...

    What Lens to Purchase Next?

Having been in a similar position a while ago, I went for a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. Lovely versatile fast lens for portrait stuff, and you can pick one up for <£200. Blows the Canon kit 18-55 lens out the water for image quality. Be aware there is a VC version that is more expensive and generally...

    Shooting in RAW?

Rob - I'm curious about this statement. My understanding was that the RAW processing engine in CS is the same as the one in Lightroom. So in terms of processing, they will be the same, won't they? Obviously they both have other strengths in terms of batch processing vs single image editing, but...

Ultra Wide Angle (for Canon crop)

I've got one, I like it a lot. Can get some great shots at 8mm. Obviously get a little bit of distortion, but the lens correction in Lightroom sorts that out very nicely. Very sharp, at both ends of range.
