    Rangefinder recommendations (analogue)

Hi everyone, I’m looking to document my work in the countryside on b&w film. I want to be able to carry a camera around with me when I’m working, so I want something either inexpensive, or bomb proof! (Ideally both). It needs to be smallish, but not tiny. Any ideas?

And painters know what they’re talking about. They’ve been doing it for centuries longer than us photographers!

Camera buying advice for a friend

I have a friend who is going to costa rica for a few months and has asked for advice on a camera. Her budget is £400, which is flummoxed me, as I don't really have my finger on the pulse of cameras in the price range. There are plenty of body-only ILCs I can think of in that range, but I don't...

I think my point was that a lot of people learn when they’re starting out that you need an image where the histogram is nice and stretched out, giving the full range of tones, and apply it as a rule to all their images, and apply it as critique to all other images, because it’s a rule that they...

    Amateur Landscape Photos

I think you’ve achieved the look you were going for. I agree that they look filmic/cinematic. It feels like this is your distinctive style so I’d stick to it and with consistency you’ll find a following. People are obsessed with getting the full range of luminosity, from blacks to whites...

Do you use a tripod for studio portraits?

    Do you? Why? Why not?

    Critique Attempt number 2....

Unfortunately I'm not hugely creative so I'd better get learning :p

    Critique Attempt number 2....

You're right, I did play with the tones a bit. I created a gradient map for the first, saved it as a present and applied it to the second, hoping for continuity but then still ended up different! *shrug*

    Critique Attempt number 2....

I'm wanting critique on the kind of things you provided critique on! So thank you. As I said, these are first forays into this kind of photography so there are clearly many unknown unknowns. Regarding your comment on the lighting leading the imagery rather than the subject, I think you're...

    Critique Attempt number 2....

I managed to get another guinea pig to pose for another studio-style shoot. I was going for more dramatic lighting aiming to highlight the textures in the skin rather than hide them. I hope I found a happy medium between this and cruelly editing to make him look 20 years older!! The cropping of...

First shots with the 'studio' setup

I had ‘Rembrandt’ and ‘dramatic’ in mind so I’m glad they came across, even if they were the most appropriate for the subject! Maybe I could have positioned her with a white wall camera-right to provide some fill. I will have a play around with increasing the ambient exposure. I was having to...

First shots with the 'studio' setup

Thanks for your comments. I didn’t really have a goal in mind - more experimenting. I have a project in mind photographing older men who have spent their lives outdoors, bringing out the character in their faces, lines-and-all. So I guess I was playing around with less flattering, more dramatic...

Thanks. it’s interesting that most people prefer the last - that’s the one that feels most like her.
