I went with the 30s exposure because a) it was there and easy to use (just dial it in) b) I wanted a shot with no star trails but exposed for the clouds & sea as well. I was using the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 so didn't want to have exposure times beyond 30s anyway.
The best thing about this shot is...
Thanks everyone, somehow I missed your comments earlier, sorry!
I'll definitely try to capture clearer skies during the autumn as well, don't mind a few clouds but I'd like a good go at the milky way also.
Andy, just a quick note on the in-camera JPEG settings.. they DO affect how the image looks on the camera screen and MAY affect the historgram displayed. So you might want to google up on the best settings to evaluate pics on the field from the rear screen.. I just leave my cameras on a Neutral...

But on the subject of extended ISOs.. I don't really find them usable. Oh I'm sure I'll run into some emergency any day now where I'll just go "all out" on ISO to get something.. but I would first go all-out on just about everything else before doing that.
ISO 25600 - the last "normal" ISO - is...
