Any fishkeepers out there?

Had our tank coming up to 2 weeks now, have been checking the ammonia levels frequently, checked them this morning and there between 0.5 and 1.0! The water looks like it could do with a freshen up what process do I need to take for it first clean!
It's only a small tank around 25ltrs.
Thanks

% water change, probably 20% in a coldwater so 5 litres, if using tapwater remember to tapsafe and leave the water at room temp for a couple of hours so the cold spike does not shock the fish.. if you have a gravel cleaner use that to remove 5l of water; in fact in a coldwater set up I would say a gravel cleaner is highly recommended if not essential as cw fish are mucky buggers especially if overfed... then put new water in, not a quick pour do it slowly, again if you have a gravel cleaner tube you can hold the new water higher than the tank and use that.

Just got back from having the tests done.

Ammonia has gone up to 'unsafe' 0.8 which is past their 'safe' 0-0.25 but not in the 'deadly' 4.0-8.0

Nitrite is zero ppm

Nitrate is 60 ppm which he said showed my filter system was working.

PH 7.2

Recommendations were on the ammonia- 30% water change tonight followed by 30% same again tomorrow. Then I've to go back for another test on Monday.

He said the anti fungal stuff I have is OK but that would require removal of carbon filter so see what Monday's results are after the water changes first.
I think daily water changes may be needed for a wee while, fortunately it is only a smallish tank :) Remember to use a dechlorinator with each change and yes remove carbon if treating. 30% would be the minimum I'd do - I've never killed fish with clean water ;)

Cheers Paul

I'm using the two I already had for these water changes

Fluval Cycle Biological Enhancer (Eliminates Ammonia & Nitrite)
Fluval Aqua Plus (Removes Chlorine & Chloramines)

An update - those 2 platy seem happier today after yesterday's change. Swimming around instead of sulking in the corner.

I no I only have a small tank but I'd like to keep it looking as healthy as pos, I don't think the pump that came with it is much cop (it's covered in Chinese writing!) What would be a good filter/air pump that I could introduce!

any of these would do the job if you are concerned about your current one..

I use a Hagen Elite Stingray 10 in our coldwater tank and I rate it but would be physically too large in a 25l tank.

I used to run a eheim in one of my smaller tanks I forget the model name but it's a ball type head that you choose how many green baskets you put on the bottom of it depending on tank size/volume and it was the best internal filter I ever used and id tried loads. That managed me great until I moved on to external filtration.

Oh the warm weather is really bringing my pond to life, though has also presented me we a rather curious situation, when getting the pond back up and running I opted for quite a powerful pump and with the fully renewed top pond including waterfall this mean that my waterfall has gone from a trickle to actually a fair old flow...only trouble being today I've observed some of my fish seem to have taken this as an invitation to try and migrate upstream :( as amusing as this is I really don't want them in the top pond as it has not preditory protection

Anyone have any insight as to why some would have started to behave like this, or is it a natural migration instinct I'm seeing in the fish

Possible they are just in that area as its the most oxygenated water?

Possibly so though I did put in another 20 clumps of oxygenator weed a few days ago to make sure that the O2 levels were maintained..

good possibility.

it might be worth checking the water quality and watch out for symptoms of a parasite as they will try to jump out if they are sick; and on the very slim chance their behaviour could be down to a faulty pump causing shocks.

I think the possibility of Parasite is the most likely and it trying to get rid of it, I've certainly seen carp jumping to try and shake parasites, but hopefully not, I don't think its going to be an issue with the pump as all of the other 60ish fish are perfectly happy...

Will see if its doing it again when I go down there, to be honest I'm hoping it's nothing bad and that its just a case of Mother Nature being triggered in that fish and it trying to swim upstream but that's likely fantasy, I have checked water quality and all are pretty much bang on normal

I've just done a clean / water change and afterwards noticed that I have 1 (yes 1) baby platy.

I'd estimate that it's about 5mm in length.

It's still just in the main tank with the other fish.

Any suggestions on what to do with 'it' ?

Managed to float a container in the tank for now and put the fry in there. I wonder if that was baby 1 or if the rest have all been eaten.

Baby fish (still an only child) is still alive.

I can only assume the rest were gobbled up by the other fish prior to me spotting them or If there were still any in the tank, I sucked the poor wee things up during the tank clean.

Only after the water settled and the lights were turned back on that I spotted the wee lone fella.

Likely that the rest were eaten as soon as they were born

As Robert says, likely the rest were a tasty little snack. Sounds like the tank has settled down, and anyway it is probable that the platys will breed again soon too :)

Unlikely as I only have one adult Platy left.

I only had 4 Platys but going by the dates on this thread it was towards the end of march I lost the other 3.

I guess the one I have left must be female and the breeding took place before the others were lost.

Good news - all the other fish are fine. The tank is looking good and once again My Peppered Cory have spawned.

My plan (now things have settled down) is to get mrs platy another few friends.

Oh and baby platy is still OK

Sorry, didn't realise the others had gone to the great fish bowl in the sky ;)

Good news about the rest though & the spawning. :)

Hi

I have 6x F1 Discus in a 260 litre tank & also a male Betta Splendens in a 36 litre. Mrs Elephant keeps 7x Orandas in a 240 litre & she also breeds Betta Splendens in goodness-knows how many tanks!

Ah I love discus! Was so close to setting another tank up for some but then we had a baby instead... In hindsight I'm not sure which would have been easier!...
