Cracking capture jeff, just been looking at your flickr page you have a lot to be proud of.

Cheers mike

another shot of the queen wasp from yesterday ,changed the w.b to cut out the yellow glare

Another 'wow' pic (y).

Hope you don't mind a bit of constructive critique, IMO the WB has added too much blue so the black of the wasp look blue rather than black. If it was me I'd reduce blue saturation in LR (y)

Here are some shots from a macro safari in the garden yesterday of some Barkflies that were on our Fatsia Japonica
All taken one hand holding the camera the other holding the leaf all taken about 1.5:1 withmy Raynox DCR250 on my Zuiko 60mm f2.8 and STF-8 flash

Out of interest. Those who shoot birds, what settings do you use for AF scanner and sensitivity?

I

I use mode 3 and -2, purely because of a recommendation in an article on 'birds in flight'

I'm starting to get the hang of this photography lark......EM1 mk2 + Panasonic 100-400 zoom.

This was in the field at the back of the house. I think the neighbour is putting out scraps of meat for it!
Same bird Buzzard (I think). Mine was much further away and this is a big crop so not so much detail.

The useful app that @Box Brownie suggested tells me this is a chaffinch, hopefully that’s right It was sat high in a tree so another quite big crop

Here is an interesting article for you to read - oodles of information.
BTW I see I should be using +2, not -2, for sensitivity!

Here's another interesting one :

The first one is a Red Kite and the other is indeed a Male Chaffinch.

PS glad you are finding the Merlin app useful. When we went to southern France last year I added extra database that includes that area. That it is a freely available resource is especially nice & welcome :)

I wasnt sure, because the detail isn't very clear, to be honest under normal circumstances I'd have binned it, the chaffinch too, but I'm using it to gauge my progress with BiF and bird photography. I used to see lots of Red Kites where I used to live, I didn't think the tail was quite right which is why I thought it might have been a buzzard,

Several years ago I used to use m43, starting with an e-m10 and then an em1.1

I’ve been through many cameras since and currently have a d500 and d600 which suit my 16 year old son for his a-level photography and his hobby which is automotive

My “problem” is that I don’t feel inclined to pick either of these cameras up for a casual trip.. As we’re on lockdown I’ve been looking back through my old snaps and see most were taken with my Olympus gear..I used to grab my m43 gear and shoot for fun but not now.

Which got me thinking. Should I pick up something for “me” ? On that basis, can someone give me a clue as to what a used e-m1 mk2 goes for ? I see prices on MPB, WEX etc but assume they’re slightly inflated ?

TIA

Knew you'd be back one day :ROFLMAO:

I bought my EM1.2 off here for £625 which I felt was a very good price.

Yeah, I’m still knocking around. I’ve had an e-m10 mk2 recently ( 18 month back maybe ) which was great. 3 months ago camera jungle was selling them for £153 but now they want over £205 which I feel is a bit steep.

ideally I’d go e-m1.2 and 12-100 but not sure if that would defeat my portable objective

I think that's the thing about m43 - it's just more fun and you're more likely to take it with you. I still have my Canon 5Div, and that is my goto if I have to shoot for someone else - local paper/charity/sports club, or need to use flash.

I took both the Canon and my Olympus gear to Spain in 2018 for two weeks and the Canon didn't get used once - in 2019, on my next trip, the Canon stayed home.

I bought the 12-100 recently - for a ski trip, so I could use it in the snow park and for landscapes without switching lenses in the snow - it has almost lived on my camera.

Thanks, budget isn’t an issue as all are affordable and within it. I just wondered if the E-M1 Mkiii is close enough now to the ‘X’ in terms of performance given the new processor etc. I have no problem with the ergonomics on either as I would put a grip on to the iI
or iii anyway.

.... Then if adding a grip I would go for the E-M1X which has it built-in. As you already know, a grip really helps shooting in either landscape or portrait orientation and also provides safer grip when walking around - I don't have straps attached to any of my camera bodies and never have done.

Here is a direct and fairly comprehensive comparison between the E-M1 mkIII and E-M1X :

I just got the 14-150 as a walkaround lens

Talking about portable, as in pocketable, I just got an Olympus TG-6. Same processor and menu interface as the M1X and so easy for me. Can even Focus Stack handheld - I shot my first macro focus stacked image this afternoon of a Bumble Bee.

I also shot the same Bumble Bee focus stacked on my M1X + Oly 60mm Macro for comparison. Both images RAW but onboard final output is JPEG by default.

I primarily got it to use instead of my iPhone for shots - Have never been able to get on with slim mobile phones to take pics and no real control either.

My first ever attempt at Focus Stacking. Info on my linked Flickr page.

E-M1X + 60mm Olympus Macro. Shot in shade but histogram-conscious therefore 1/60s, F/2.8, ISO 800, handheld Focus Stack onboard (10 RAW > 1 final JPEG output)

E-M1X + 60mm Olympus Macro. Shot in shade but histogram-conscious therefore 1/30s, F/2.8, ISO 800, handheld Focus Stack onboard (10 RAW > 1 final JPEG output)
and it still worked even though the Bee crawled slooowly towards me.

Gotta say I am gobsmacked how capable the camera is. These are my first proper macro shots rather than just close-ups.

My Olympus TG-6 did well too - Focus stacked and handheld but not quite the edge which the M1X + 60mm Macro has. As always it's Horses-for-Courses and I am very very pleased with the TG-6 so far, taking underwater shots too < Far better than any mobile phone!

The vari-angle screen on the M1X allowed me to get angles I couldn't on the TG-6 because its screen is fixed - How else do you get 45ft underwater depth and 7ft drop proof plus mega crush proof, all to very high IP-rated certificates (higher than the M1X even), that's why it's called TOUGH and why I load a fast Sony TOUGH SD card. Overkill? - Nah, I always want high spec just in case and so I can relaaax about such things and concentrate on the shots.
