Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Okay this is clearly not an amazing shot (didn't focus on the eye), but It was a split second shot of a brand new visitor to the garden, thanks to the new feeding station set up :)

A stunning group of 5 Long Tail Tits came to play!!

E-M1.3 & Oly 100-400....... 150mm, f/5.7 @1/80th sec. ISO 6400, Lr, DeNoise, Sharpen AI.

What this image did show me though, is despite my recent questioning of the system and considering of other systems & lenses, that even in rubbish light conditions & in rushed composure times, you can still get a VERY usable image :)

good capture Joe . focus is a bit out but you'll get there in the end

Agh! courier delays........

My M1X finally left Olympus in Germany on the 16th but has yet to be scanned into the UK (UPS Stanford Le Hope?), so the original scheduled delivery has slipped to the Tuesday 22nd :(

It's so annoying when things get delayed but sometimes things don't get scanned in and continue anyway I'v had that a few times with my Gimbals so it could still arrive befor then.

Rob.

Out trying to get a bit of practice with my naw 100-400 f5-6.3.
This LTT was in a holly bush in poor light. I was using CAF with Tracking on and a single small focus point. I think I was focusing on the eye but as far as I can see focus seems to have transferred to the leaf above it's head. Any suggestions as to what was going on.

Rather than C+AF &TR

IMO you would have been better off using S-AF ;)

Simples turn the bloody tracking off it doesn’t work I use smallest fine point and c.af only

C-AF efficacy AFAIK is likely different across the various model variants, 10 series ; 5 series ; 1 series. So I surmise, depending on the body in use, there will be situations and circumstances where a choice of S-AF is better than C-AF compared to someone using a different series body?

I previously used an EM5 ii and I only ever used S-AF, so as well as a new lens I'm also new to the EM1 ii. Trouble is I'm not only finding the learning curve bloody steep, it also seems very slippery.

My daughter ordered two settees from DFS in July, finally turned up last week.
Delivery bloke did say that was the longest wait so far, but had quite a few to deliver that were ordered in August.
On a slow boat from China I reckon

I thought following the debacle of the chemical inserts in the cushions a few years back (query when exactly?) that they now made everything in the UK???

No idea to be honest, just assumed they were made abroad like everything else these days.

*Edit* just looked it up and apparently fabric in this country and leather abroad.
The Chinese factory isn't far from Wuhan which might explain even longer delays

Ah! now that is what I think I recall, they put some sort of insecticide in the cushions and it was giving buyers rashes!

pag the programming will fall into place . just give yourself time

Yes, a steep learning curve especially with Olympus. A case of don't change too many (deeper) settings all at once......baby steps until you grasp the full potential of what are these amazing computers with lenses on the front.

Looks like the couriers are pulling the stops out....

My M1X has just been delivered :). It tracked to Stanford le hope on 18th and at the local RDC on 19th.

Under normal conditions I was expecting it to be delivered Monday or Tuesday, so to get a Saturday delivery on a "standard" service is exceptional  :D

Going to leave it to acclimatise (as outer box feels a tad damp/clammy) to room temperature before opening and charging the batteries........and updating to v2 firmware.

Paul my main settings are colours set to vibrant (apparently it helps A/F) . Af sens . +2 , c.af only . . 13fps in high speed mode ... small single point for small birds . Lens priority in menu . .. but I do change things frequently to see if it improves things ... if you have already had Olympus it about 3 -4 weeks learning curve .. I also have my EVF set to off so it’s live all the time no blackout between shots in burst mode

It's probably me being a total numpty but I cannot find any colours or vibrant setting anywhere. I've been through all the menu settings I can imagine and even sat through a 45min video on setting the camera up.

I've left my Em1ii on the default settings for colour, but in Menu G you can choose to turn the warmer colours off. Also other colour related settings are here - colour space, WB etc.

Picture mode settings are on D1 if you want to make e.g. vivid, available or unavailable (for jpegs). Picture mode is in the top right when you press the OK button for the Super Control Panel. (At least it is on mine, but I think you can tweak this display).

I've just realised on the Super Control panel you can tweak the saturation also.

FWIW

I have done the FW update to v2 but before doing so I looked to see what the out of the box FW version was, it v1.0 now looking here E‑M1X - Services & Support - Olympus - Downloads (olympus-europa.com) there is no v1.0 suggesting that it factory fresh but in an odd way! Just when was it made to still have such lower number FW when ther have been various updates from the 19th June last year???

I have been working my way through the E-M1X menu and setting up my core elements (inc adding key Menu items to "My Menu"). This is in advance of creating my initial 'go at' creating my Custom sets 1 though 4.

Hopefully get a few opportunities over the next couple of weeks to get the shutter count started ;) Must check the exercise terms under Tier 4

EM1X - I tried focus priory cog C-1 and had a good hit rate for BIF using bird detect , I need to try this a bit more as I don't know for sure if this has an effect or if I was just having a good day .

It's a shame that Olympus don't give a guide for what works best and the Menu settings needed to get the best out of this new Software for birds .

Rob.
Edit - I use BBF and just found that with the above C-1 setting if you just press the shutter button without engaging the BBF it will take shots even though they are not in focus so for this to work properly you must have the camera looking for focus .

I find this interesting to me because I always pre focus around 40yds and in the heat of the moment sometimes press the shutter as the bird looks focused (but isn't ) a split second before i press and engage the BBF this would explain why sometimes the first few shots are just out of focus .

Of cause its poring down with rain today so can't check .

Rob.
