The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Went out just for a bit of shutter therapy round the neighbourhood with the A7Cii and Viltrox 55mm EVO.

My camera and lens have arrived. Yay

Any settings tips? . For Fiji I always watched pall2tech on YouTube. Is there a Sony guy online ;)

Remember that there's the Fn menu where you can put the things you're most likely to change so you don't need to dive into the menus very often.

Good luck with the kit and have fun.

It's difficult to give tips as we all have different needs so will assign different things to different buttons. I would suggest assigning your most used functions to physical buttons, and your second most used settings in the Fn menu. I would also suggest having frequently used settings in mymenu and have a button assigned to go straight to mymenu.

I am indeed assigning buttons. But sometimes there are a few basic settings which are useful and not basic to find.

I can’t think of any off the top of my head, they’re all pretty basic.

I set all my cameras for BBF, Sony’s AF-C is ultra reliable and so you don’t need AF-S (unless you want to of course ;)).

When I’m back on the computer I’ll post my settings, whether you like them or not is a different matter. I have a drive mode dial though which you won’t have.

I use spot metering and spot focus on my A7III, eye detect and face detect on full-time. Outside of that just use the dials as indicated.

Anyone used both the tamron 35-150 and the 70-200gm2?

Contemplating my next buy and really struggling with what I would use the most.

The last 70-200 I had was the mk2 on Nikon. While optically it was great I found the size and weight ment I didn’t use it that often ( both my kids were under very young which didn’t help)

I mainly use wider lens 20/50 and 28-75 but find myself wanting more reach at times so the 70-200 was the logical step.
The tamron would just be an easier solution as it covers a wider range but looses max range.

My worry is I won’t be quite satisfied with the results
After buying the 20 and 50gm I’ve started to feel the 28-75 (v1)doesn’t match and the 35-150 could be similar

I think the 35-150 would be a poor match for the 20-50, with too much overlap and never wide enough/long enough. I'd consider from Tamron the 70-180 (lower weight, fast max aperture) or 50-300. There's also a Sony 70-350 crop that is reckoned to be good on FF and has great image quality.

This interesting as I have a similar dilemma after moving to FF.

On my A6700 I used the Sony 70-350 and I was very impressed with it. Unfortunately it went with the rest of my gear. Therefore I'm considering rebuying to use on the A7CR in crop mode or like you an alternative.

In summary it was nice and sharp with very useful reach and I could carry it all day.

I used to have the Nikon 70-200mm VR II and the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GM II is noticeably lighter, as the stats would suggest. A lighter option is the Tamrom 70-180mm which is optically very good, but you do lose a number of the controls such as the aperture ring.
