£100 to spend

I'd say save up some more and maybe go for a longer zoom to complement the one that you have?

ahh your a tammy so am i maybe we could meet up because i have the a300 and maybe a 50mm lens could be your next purchase. i have the minolta 50mm f1.7 you could try out as you can get them less than £100.

Yep Tammy born and bred, was thinking about a zoom lens 75-300mm if thats any good? You wasn't in the town on the weekend taking a photo of the Sir Robert Peel statue cause i saw some with a sony camera? Yeah could meet up would like to pick your brains etc

nah that werent me, it was probably garynlea another sony user an tammy liver. i would love to have a meetup on the weekend, gives me something to do than be bored.

one of my 365 shots here uses a 50mm fairly wide open

the low light thing is fairly slef explanatory, big hole, more light, works better when there is less light around

With the 18-55 Canon kit lens (can't speak for the Sony, but I would assume it's more or less the same [Checked, and it is]), the max. aperture achievable at 55mm is f5.6.

With the cheapest 50mm prime, the max. aperture is f1.8. Much wider, which means it lets more light in, allowing you to take shots in low-light conditions, at a faster shutter speed, without the need for a flash.

Eg.

It also gives a much shallower depth of field, meaning the subject is in sharp focus, but background and foreground remain nicely out of focus.

Not a perfect example, but the only one I have in my Flickr at the moment:

If I were you I would save your money and see where you photography takes you as you develop. Your better of getting a good understanding before you go waste £100 on a lens that you will hate a few months down the line.
