I have been using my iMac 27" i7 3.6 Late 2009 for Zoom conferencing with very good effect but I would like to be able to extend the display as I normally have 70-80 connections.
I have obtained another iMac 27" i7 2.8 Late 2009 and would like to use it to connect to the other to accomplish extending the display.
I have read a few bits and pieces and got one answer on another forum but these mostly refer to connecting different model machines and so I am not confident of what I need.
Is it just a case of getting a mini-displayport cable and connecting both iMacs together or is something else needed?
Would be most grateful for a knowledgeable answer on what is required. TIA

I wonder if it offers the facility similar to the iPad on Sidecar? This is amazing for me, I use my MacBook Pro and then just add not he iPad wirelesses as a second screen - I'm sure the iMac must offer something similar?

I am sure some apple specialist will be along shortly, to save me doing a bunch of googling! But that's just my initial thought!

Network cable attached to ethernet ports on both systems click on screen sharing and off you go..will need to either set up a password or just accept on the other mac when launching..nothing really complicated about it..if you don't have an ethernet port you can get an adaptor to work off the thunderbolt port or usb..I connect 2 macbooks from several years apart using the network method with cable never any probs

I hadn't thought of using that as I use LAN when I would need to use the 2nd screen, however wifi is good so it is another option I'll look at. (y)

You’re looking for target display mode. I run a 2015 iMac and an older 2012 iMac as a second screen.

im not sure which models are compatible, you’ll have to Google that But it’s just a case of connecting the two with a display port to display port cable and pressing CMD-F2 on the Mac you want to be the second display.

more info and compatible models here

That's great that you are doing it with 2 x iMacs, my cable should be with me by the end of the week. :)

It works ... got me an 'Ivanky' mdp to mdp cable from Amazon, (not all mdp cables work apparantly!).
  • Connected mdp cable end to each of the 27" 2009 iMacs.
  • Powered up 1st iMac and logged in ... everything as normal.
  • Powered up 2nd iMac and logged in ... everything as normal.
  • Pressed CMD + F2 on the 2nd iMac and instantly it went to the second display.
Can now work with two displays. :)
