70D Extended warranty £40, also used 100 L macro £600 - worthwhile?

As I do with my current cameras, I expect to be working my new camera rather hard (600-1200 shots on days when I am shooting out in the field). Bristol cameras tell me they will do a two year extended warranty on a 70D for £40. That seems worthwhile (I had an extended warranty from them for one of my bridge cameras and it failed just within the 3 year period and it had multiple replacements done to it under the warranty.)

Is there an equivalent when buying on line?

I was thinking of purchasing all the kit through a single Amazon order, because I've had good experience of their returns policy. However, Bristol Camera match the Amazon price for a 70D with kit 18-55, and they are relatively local (half hour drive) so, with the extended warranty, I'm very inclined to go with them at least for the camera.

They have a used 100 macro L for £600, on which they will give a six months warranty (but don't do extended warranties on lenses). This compares to £739 there and at Amazon for a new one. Any thoughts on whether that would be a good deal?
 
usually eextended waranties are crap - because a camera that fails with in 3 years of normal use wasnt of merchantable quality in the first place (SOGA etc) , also many extended waranties have lopholes you could drive a coach and four through.
 
£40 won't exactly make you skint... but I imagine you will probably upgrade before anything happened.

100mm can be bought cheaper used with remaining warranty (£550 ish). The shop is also selling a used lens but at higher price point. Used returns/trade ins have high chance of having some minor but annoying flaws. Perhaps come to the show in 2 weeks and pick a new one with discount.

Yes, that's why we never buy extended warranties for white goods.

Which I am very suspicious of in general. But in this case, with this particular company, I did (don't know why) take up the extended warranty and ended up almost three years later actually invoking it. To my surprise I was pretty sure I got back more than I paid because of the several parts that were replaced. Hmmm.... more thought required. Thanks for the input.

I think it quite likely that I won't upgrade the camera in the three years an extended warranty would cover. I see people, well, one person in particular I'm thinking of, doing terrific closeups/macros of a quality I would like to emulate, and although he is using all the fancy optics, his body is a 40D, so I think I might have a problem trying to demonstrate an image quality based justification to the finance manager. And she does take a close interest in the images, and isn't susceptible to GASeous arguments. :)

Hi Nick I bought my 100L new for roughly £650 as a grey import from one stop digital from Hong Kong
Not sure what the prices are now I bought mine when it first came out and prices may well have dropped since then
If you want to get it in this country Hdew cameras are a grey importers are based in the uk who supply a uk receipt
I know some people frown on grey imports but I would rather pay £50 more than the secondhand price and get a new one

Grey imports give me a nervous feeling. Not disapproval, but a bit more uncertainty about what happens if something goes wrong. I've been reading a thread touching on that recently, and perhaps I'm being over-cautious, but I don't think I'll go down that route.

No worries it's a valid point
I don't think that the price difference between grey and official imports is as much as it used to be anyway
 
If you are thinking of getting an extended warranty, just be sure it kicks in after the manufacturer's warranty ends. I've heard of places that advertise so many years of extended warranty, but they begin at the point of sale, so you are actually paying for first year or so for nothing.

If they are trying that old scam, it may be worth pointing out to them and try and get the full two years in addition to the standard cover.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check. I'm sure my previous extended warranty from Bristol Cameras added two years on to the one year manufacturer's warranty, and I claimed just as three years was coming round. But I will check, because of course they may have changed their approach since then.
 
Personally I think the Canon 100 macro looks desperately overpriced compared to the Sigma 105 OS at £370ish.
 
Just thought I'd mention my camera has currently been sent off under the 3 year warranty that it came with, from HDEW cameras - no quibbles at all. Their 3 year warranty was free on my camera. I think lenses only get a 1 year warranty. I've had to send the camera off and expect it's return in 2 weeks time - not sure how that compares to elsewhere.
