A Ghostly tale

I wouldn't normally post something like this because, although there have been posts about the paranormal before I think people who experience so-called ghosts do see something but it's because of some hallucination..I mean trick of the mind, a play of light and some people just have an overactive imagination. I'm not suggesting they have a mental welfare issue..Poltergeist stories are found to be hoaxes.What has prompted me to post about this is that ,this morning, I spoke to someone, a professional man, who, after me relating the two stories on Youtube told me that he can believe it and wouldn't stay 5 minutes in a house like that and went on to relate his own experience. On my Youtube selection last night (TV) my eye was caught by a story about a women,Jennifer Patterson, and her two children..a boy and a girl who lived in Warsaw,Indiana. She'd just moved into the house and not long afterwards she heard bangs and someone walking around. A deep male voice told her to "get out". To keep the post as brief as possible I'v included the video. A second was of the same nature. The story I was told this morning involved professional people. The chap said that he and his wife visited friends up on the NW coast of England. It was a modern home extended from an 18th century home. He and his wife stayed in the old home. In the night he heard a steady thumping. He woke to see that it was his dog,which was lying on the floor at the side of the bed, banging its tail on the floorboards and staring at the half-open door. There in the doorway was a small boy..about 5 years old dressed in rags, no shoes. He just stood there. The chap put his heads back down on the pillow but didn't wake his wife. I think I might have done that...ie woken my wife. I don't know. It was quiet for a while when the dog's tale started thumping on the floor again. Once again, there was the boy in the doorway. Still the chap didn't wake his wife. When he got up he told the wife of the host couple and he was expecting a sceptical response but she said.."Oh, so you saw the boy ?" The host couple had their two sons home from Uni and at breakfast their mum said that this chap had something to tell them all.. He related the tale, The host's husband said the same as his wife..basically. "Yes, that's the boy who drowned in the garden pond and wasn't found for several days.". The chap went to the local pub and when someone found out who he was staying with asked if he'd seen 'the boy yet?". So..it was common knowledge. The two sons were annoyed that their parents hadn't told them because they slept in that old section of the house when they came home from Uni. . So..there you have it. It's nothing to do with religion but people seem to think a priest will sort it. Ask the spirit to leave or whatever.

It would take too long to tell the story so if anyone's interested just skip through this video. Like me, the chap was a sceptic and told me that he would have dismissed accounts like his and Mrs Patterson's in Indiana because he's a man who looks to science and reality for answers .. Like me, he'd say ..there's an explanation. I don't know what to make of the video nor that person's account re the child.

My wife and I stayed in a hotel not far from York town centre, early in the morning my woke me to ask “Can you hear kids?” Well not being awake fully, and not having my hearing aids in I muttered no, or something similar as it was early, same the next morning, so at breakfast wife asked the owner about kids, she told us many, many years(decades) before a school had been up the lane at the side of the hotel but was long gone, but lots of people heard voices when staying in rooms in that part of the hotel.

Whilst working for British Coal at Castlebridge colliery in Fife a colleague came rushing into a sub station some of us were sitting, “I’ve just seen the Monk” he was visibly shaken and close to tears and wanted taken to the pit bottom to go straight up the pit, he was taken out by two of us. He explained he been in a roadway carrying out an examination on rope haulage system when the monk in his typical habit appeared out the roadway side, he! stared at him for few seconds then crossed the roadway and disappeared into the stone on the other side. This guy never came back down the pit and was thought of as sensible( he’s a police officer now). Many months later another man came into the same sub station (popular hidey hole for us tradesmen) claiming to have seen the monk in the same roadway, same visitation, guy was taken up the pit to see Sister in first aid, he did return to work after a couple of days. Monks were a popular phenomenon seen down pits in my area as some seams were easily reached by short drifts dug into the ground and mined by monks in the surrounding Abbeys etc. Never saw anything myself but on odd times I felt a presence when working alone and unable see anyone around, do they exist? Who knows.

I used to be very interested in the paranormal, I read the books etc but less so now. I'll watch things on Youtube if they pop up and look serious and credible but I don't go searching for ghostie stuff.

I think my first exposure to ghostly stories was at a family wedding when I was a boy and relatives I'd not met before started telling stories about my grandmothers haunted house where we lived for a time. I was just a baby so it all passed me by. Until that day nobody had mentioned it but after this my mam and dad told me more. My mam was in complete denial but clearly very rattled and frightened and she remained so on this topic, my dad was analytical and whilst accepting that something strange was going on didn't seem frightened. Since then and over the years I've heard many stories from friends, acquaintances and people I worked with.

Fast forward to when I was based on a government site fixing computer kit. Everything was fine until we moved to a different building and then some of the government staff told us stories and we believed they believed what they were telling us. Some wanted to get the place shut down as unfit for use and after one incident the cleaners refused to come to where we were which was underground and that introduced it's own issues. All this bothered my engineers much more than me, in fact I wasn't bothered at all and I took the Michael out of those who were. That location was the most "haunted" place I've ever been in for any length of time. I never saw anything as "real" as some others reported but I did see a shadow once and in another location when we'd moved again I had three very strange things happen while I was alone in the workshop involving the movement of things one of which I saw happen. At another place I experienced a cold spot which was all very odd. I didn't have a thermometer so all I had was my response, you could just step in and out of it. Most weird. I was only there for a day, the people there told me about it, I experienced it and I'd have loved to go back and investigate.

Mrs WW is terrified of anything like this but like my dad I'm more analytical and if there's a bump in the night I have to investigate and just like on that government site there's no fear there for me. Having a technical background and not being frightened by all this I did think of volunteering once when someone was looking for recruits but the "hitchhiker effect" stopped me as I didn't want to possibly drag others into anything. This hitchhiker effect is something worth looking into in itself. As to what all this means I think ghosts and hauntings which are not inventions or hysteria or caused by ordinary things could be a number of different and maybe unrelated phenomena just all lumped together. I wouldn't dismiss it all and credible people are coming to believe that some paranormal things are real phenomena and possibly consciousness related. I do believe we are more than just meat robots, I think there's more going on and we might over time have a better understanding and might have explanations for some of this.

I think that last sentence is very plausable. I didn't go looking for such stories but after watching the above video she came across as a genuine person and eventually left the house she loved . Credible people relate such accounts so I'm not going to dismiss them anymore as figments of the imagination. The only fly in the ointment is that these stories are usually related to violent deaths so the obvious question is..what about all violent deaths ? What about those killed in war ?

It's interesting that you mention violent deaths and although I don't think that the majority of the incidents I've heard of involve those my grandparents haunted house story could potentially. My dad once told me a story about a bombing raid during WW2. He was crouching down in a bedroom with a mirror angled so he could see what was going on in the sky, he watched a bomber picked out by the searchlights as rockets exploded all around it blowing the tail off. The bomber jettisoned its bombs before crashing and the bombs destroyed the houses on either side and blew him out of the room and down the stairs. Luckily my grandparents house survived more or less intact. I don't know if the haunting predated the war or not.
