Hi there, I am total DSLR beginner trying to move into the brave new world of semi pro photography!! I have just enrolled on an online photography course to help me learn the ropes but am now itching to buy my first (second hand) semi pro camera.

I have been trawling through DSLR reviews on the net and am quite interested in the Canon EOS 40d as I think this seems quite a reliable and function packed camera which should suit both my needs and budget for a second hand camera.

Can anyone offer me any advice about whether I am on the right track or whether a Nikon might be a better purchase.

I know this all sounds very basic but I really don't want to spend my precious money on a camera that will not suit my needs or is far too specialist so any advice would be gratefully received.

best way is to try the different models see what is comfortable in your hands.

+1 for that, go to Jesspos/Jacobs/whatever and try them out. Then buy whatever you like online. ^^

Something like 40D is really good start, my first DSLR was (still is) 30D. After 3 years of use I still think it was good choice over the others on market at the time.

Hi sarah and welcome

The 40d is a cracking camera but before you buy go to you local camera shop a try different brand and see what feels right, you will know when you find it.

Canon, nikon, sony all make fantastic dslr's so one is not better than the other.

Once you have decided have a look in the fore sale section of this site as second hand kits come up for sale everyday, plus most people on here are either pro's or enthusiasts so you know it will have been looked after .

Thanks guys for your replies, I will definitely go and have a look at some cameras in the flesh and see how they look and feel. I think I had become too hung up on the reviews to think about the obvious. So exciting though can't wait to get snapping!! :)
