Afghanistan

Take care Rob. Stay safe. Hope the tour goes quickly and smoothly.

And don't do anything stupid...

....like picking up a Canon :D

Please pass on my regards to Flash in the Pan ;)

:cautious:

I've never been sent to Afghanistan......Coventry, yes, but Afghanistan no

Stay safe Rob :)

Stay safe in Afghanistan seems like a tall order, so just take lots of care and best wishes for a safe return.

take care of yourself Rob, good luck to you and your colleagues

Here now - all the way 'South'...
Feet hurt and legs ache after the four-day in-country refresher package - the dreaded 'RSOI' - walk 2k to the ranges every day for the shooting packages - no shade and 38C - thanks for that guys!
Listening to the briefings from the Bomb-disposal guys - well it's a lot worse here than the news reports have you believe...when I was last here in '06 there was no IED (booby-trap) threat...now it's everywhere - 4% of our casualties are now shooting-related - the rest are from IEDs...trip-mines and pressure-pad devices mostly.

I'm now burnt lobster-red, suffering spontaneous nose-bleeds from inhaling the mica-like dust that gets everywhere, drinking 6-12 litres of water a day and still peeing stewed tea only twice a day....
Cameras are OK - I took over the set of D3 bodies from the outgoing photographer (mine stayed at HQ Land and he'll take those over on his return) and will do a sensor clean on them tomorrow as he was too scared to do it himself. These are only three months old, same as my old set and still in good nick apart from minor scuffage - when they get properly war-torn I'll take a photo of them and post it up to horrify all the 'jewellery-merchants' on here...
I've brought one D3x body as well for any portraits and 'nice' photos I feel like taking, but the brunt of the work will be done on the 'Threes'...

Hey Rob nice to hear from you, it seems we got lucky our lad went out to Cyprus instead of that hell hole anyway you keep your head down mate

i think it is only when you have first hand reports of how bad it is that you realise how little people on the outside know how bad it is , my thoughts are with you , i wont say prayers as i am not religous , keep us posted as to how it is going (y)

Cameras all nice and clean now...
It's tough here - the NAAFI is selling Gillette razor blades for $21.90 a pack!
I'm growing a bloomin' beard...

Good t'internet connection - totally unrestricted and all for me...
1st job tonight - a Vigil Ceremony for the last bloke fallen...lots of those going on right now unfortunately...

That place sounds like a right midden.

Keep your head down, Rob.

The current theory is that we should de-commission Trident here and just go home...

Please do Rob. It would be good to see. Having "met" a silver 1DsII once (all paint pretty much was knocked off) I do like these used cameras...

Best of luck out there.

That's the Gillette cartel in action. They sell them for the same price in the US shops as they do in Tesco. I use the Tesco Value ones - dirt cheap and last ages (for me - a couple of weeks or more).

well....
the postal address is:

24864891 Sgt Rob Knight
Media PIC
TFH HQ
Lashkar Gah
BFPO 715

all Red-Cross parcels gratefully recieved - no sweeties or snacks - I'm on "Op Massive" again - the whole media ops team are doing the "300" Fitness Programme and it's a bloody killer...
We'll all look like Greek Gods by Xmas...hopefully not poseidon though...lol

Reading material is at a premium so any old Photo Magazines would be really great.

...as you can see from my post in General Photo Sharing - the previous Phot took the bloody neck-straps with him - now I know I'm being picky, but if someone could source a branded Nikon D3 strap, that'd be peachy...
Wait-out on that as I'm going to plead poverty with Nikon UK and see if they'll send me one out - I'll tell them that the only alternative is an old EOS strap I found in the cupboard...lol

p.s Postage up to 2Kg is FREE from the UK...

I think there should be a sticky thread that Rob can add what he needs too, sure we will be able to get things sorted between us (y)

Got few Outdoor Photography Mags I can post if you like ?

Only just found this thread Rob. You take care mate and I'm more than happy to join in with the rest on here and send gear out to you.
I have a huge respect for all of you guys/girls out there and send you my best wishes of a safe tour and a safe journey home.

 I may have some old Canon magazines somewhere, I'm sure they would be appreciated!!

On a more serious note, it may be worth Rob saying what magazines (other than porn ) are generally read both by him and others so they could be passed around other people out there as well :)

Oh I'm sooooo tempted to send you a couple of Canon straps :)
but I'll send you a box of goodies instead!

cheers
Bill
