Yes
is easier to sync with outlook? Not just the email but the calendar as well?

I've got a winmo phone just now which is great from a work point of view but it's getting a bit battered and should really be replaced.

Thanks in advance :)

I don't use outlook, but what about the new windows phones?

When you say outlook, is that on a wired connection to synch, or are you thinking wirelessly to a server?

My Android Desire HD sinks wirelessly with Googlemail to back up all my contacts -calendar etc. You just need to set up a Googlemail accoount but well worth doing.

Android but if you wait, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 is due for release shortly witha dual core processor.
Otherwise the orginal Galaxy S or HTC Desire HD as they are currenty the best two Androind phones and in that order.
Syncing with outlook / gmail is a doddle.

Even taking into consideration the difference between desktop and server side syncing, I think that you're going to have to find a different criteria to differentiate between the two types.

Both Android and iPhones sync well with Outlook as the technology has been about for years and is a pretty basic requirement. Set up Imap properly and you have synced mail as well a la Blackberry.

As an iPhone user my immediate response is Android, but that's because I'm a Mac/MobileMe user too and know that it was a bit of a faff on when I was trying to setup my other halves iPhone with gMail email/calendar (it's worked pretty much faultless since though) but a quick google suggests that it's easy to setup Outlook Sync through iTunes so it may not be as bad as I first thought.

I sync my iphone with outlook... its not quite as easy as an android though..

What I have done is setup a gmail calendar on my iphone and then run the gmail calendar sync on my PC. This sync's my outlook and gmail at set intervals. the iphone syncs to google automatically..

And - I have the calendar sync running on my PC at home as well as work, so two Outlooks and my iPhone are all in sync

Works a treat

if by outlook you mean sync with exchange servers, then android is really good

just went into one of the shops and they're a real option. The interface is a LOT better than 6.X

I really don't like the idea of syncing from the likes of a gmail account. I've enough stuff to think about without that.

neil, I already use HTC sync with a winmo 6.5 phone. Does that also work with android because if it does, that's what I'll go for. Literally plug and play. I just plug it into the laptop in the morning and that keeps it charged up and syncs both devices.

Win Mobile 7 isn't truly mulitasking.

I don't understand what the big deal is about phones not multi tasking. I couldn't understand why people were knocking the iphone for it either?

What would you want to multitask on a phone for? That's a genuine question, not a knock down. I'm either just checking email, answering a call, making a call, occasionally web browsing, that sort of thing. Don't even text much.

Genuine Answer is that i use it for GPS.

It's on a mount in my car - and it handles calls and does GPS at the same time. Its a major problem for a lot of people at the moment. It may not be one for you but it is for a high percentage.

Windows phone 7 is currently not able to do that.

*EDIT* i also use it for tracking my bike rides as well, but thats more for my information than a genuine requirement. But the GPS for me is an absolute must. Tomtom and ALK - the two main players, have already said they are not currently doing versions for windows phone 7.

Fair point Barney. My current phone has gps but the screen's so small I use my tomtom. I can see that that would actually be handy, especially if it would also sync into a bluetooth radio for hands free?

Yep - Mine does that. I have a bluetooth kit in the car with Steering wheel controls, and the GPS running at the same time on the phone. The beauty of that is that I can take a call and still have my gps running, albeit silently, and when i leave the car I take the phone with me - no need to worry about hiding the gps separately.

Ta, as a matter of interest which phone do you use, if you don't mind of course? :)

I'm hostorically a windows mobile user, but I currently use an iphone 4 because windows phone 7 wont do what I need it to. Otherwise I'd probably be getting the HTC HD7.

I'm due an upgrade, but not sure what to do at the moment. I keep thinking that I may go HTC Desire HD, but Android is in so many different flavours at the moment I'm not sure I want to go back to something like that, deciding which ROM is best, tweaking it etc.

The iphone just works, does what i want it to, and sits nicely with the Ipad as well for sharing Video and music, so i will probably stay with that. Plus my Archos DVR records in a format that imports directly to the ipad, so moving to android would probably take more time than I have at the moment to get everything sorted.

The iphone 5 is due out later this year, so i may save my upgrade for that, not that it will be cheap, or easily available. The iphone 4 is still a nightmare to get hold of. If you want an unlocked one from apple, you cant just turn up at an apple store to get one, you have to book an appointment and then turn up at your time and queue. And thats about 2-3 months before the new one is due out. They simply cant make enough to sell.

yes, there is HTC sync for Android as well

This.

Depends if you can be bothered/like playing with all the tweaks, roms etc. For me I just want something that works for me and how I use it, updates are automatic, and that is the iphone.

The most "tweaking" I'll be doing is setting up email, and maybe sat nav. I've got an ipod touch and there are things in the whole apple system I don't like at all but it's also got some very good points.

At the moment the HTCsync feature is a big plus for android, for me at least. Nice and simple and it just works.

The problem I see with Android, is that its very much like Windows mobile 6.5 and earlier, in that everyone is tweaking and cooking roms all the time.

Dont get me wrong, i was all for this when i had a phone, and was a contributing member on XDA Developers ar times. I had a total of 7 windows mobile devices over a 3 year period.

The ipad 2 and Ios 4.3 thread shed some light on this, with comments like "android's best for tech savvy people" and "theres some great people out there cooking roms" (not direct quotes as i cant be bothereed to go find that bunfight again).

All the main suppliers seem to ship bloated ROMS for windows mobile, and I'm guessing the same is true for Android, as people are feeling the need to cook roms again to improve it. Each phone is different, with a different version, with different applications on it.

I'm not saying the iphone is perfect - but at the moment - for me - i dont want to be messing around with a phone to get the best out of it. The iphone 4 just works out of the box. I can't get some of the apps that i use on the phone on Android, so for me the choice is simple.

I know it's a matter of personal choice but mobiles are becoming more like pocket computers, having a few apps open is handy feature imho.
However if this isn't an issue for you and you are happy with Win mobile, why not stick with if you are happy?
It'd be like telling you to sell your camera kit and buy another make instead :D

So do Android phones, quirks are mainly noticed by techie people, the average consumer just gets on with using the phone.
Mention 'laggy or RFS file system' to many Samsung Galaxy S owners and they will not only give you a blank stare, they will say 'it works fine for me'.

The one thing I have always admired with Apple is their total control over the OS and this is because they are the only ones supplying the hardware.
Microsoft have control over their computer OSes and in my view, they and Google should be doing the same with their mobile OSes.
The logic that people want their phones stuffed full of useless bloatware is something the manufacturers need to wake and realise is a silly thing to do.
However, as a geek I love the idea that I can choose the best hardware available for my smartphone rather than be tied to the same company for hardware and OS.

Those are comments I made in the thread, they still stand and it wasn't 'bunfighing', as usual it started of as a healthy debate then as usual, the fanboys came along.
Whatever technology people decide to go with is a matter of personal choice but when fanboys say blah blah is the best without any knowledge of a rival platform, then the arguements start.
If it hadn't been for HTC releasing the Desire then Samsung releasing the Galaxy S, I'd probably be sat here with an iphone 4.
Although I enjoyed winding up fanboys about the Antenna issue with the iphone 4, I still agree with Steve Jobs that this problem wasn't new.
It happened years ago when manufacturers first started building them into the phones case.

I have the Desire HD Doddy and it's a great phone apart from 2 things - battery life, and the volume from the onboard speakers for media is pretty much below acceptable, although ring tones and alarms etc are fine.

Jan has the earlier Desire (non HD) and battery life and speaker volume are both miles better.

I'm not a heavy user, Bluetooth gets used in the car about 2 hours a day and I usually make just a few calls and texts in an average day, I just about get 24 hours use off a charge, but I charge it each night. If you're a heavy user during the working day you might find the battery life a problem.

Agreed.

I got a Desire HD yesterday, and whilst the battery life so far has been better than I expected after reading reviews, I think I'll be buying a second battery (very cheap online) and just keeping it around fully charged if I ever intend to be away overnight or something.

A good example being I fully charged my phone before going to sleep last night, around 2am, it was at 100 percent when i left it on my bedside table, I woke up, around 12 noon (lazy yes I know) battery had only dropped ten percent, and whilst it wasn't doing anything, just sitting there, I've read horror stories of 6 hour battery life with minimal activity etc... So I was pleased with that.

Luke - try downloading Advanced Task Cleaner 2 from Android market - it's a freebie and kills all those running apps in the bg. There's a lot of conflicting opinion about this - people will tell you those apps make no impact on the processor speed and it's probably true, but they certainly make a difference to the battery life. I've tried it with and without ATC2 and with is lots better.

Yeah- terrible when this android fanboys get involved in those threads - and the apple haters :D

Microsoft have control over their computer OSes and in my view, they and Google should be doing the same with their mobile OSes.

Which is exactly what Microsoft are beginning to do with windows phone 7.

They are not allowing any manufacturer to skin the device - you will see that they all look pretty much the same when turned on.

They are also stipulating hardware requirements, all the phones must meet certain standards.

Having said that, they're still not supplying the hardware as that's not their core business. The only ones who are is apple, and they can't keep up with demand. Even now, the queue for iPhone 4s at the apple store means that you have to make an appointment to go and buy one. You cant just turn up and buy one.

Cheers CT :) Not really sure which phone I want although I am familiar with HTC, on my third one now, so that counts for something. There is something very intuitive about the way the Iphone works though and the fact that the Android OS and manufacturers seem to keep churning out new variations is a bit disconcerting. Apple do seem to have the package pretty much sorted, they're good at what they do and keep on doing it.

Tried them out in a retailer tonight and don't really care for the "sharp" edges on the iphone 4, the 3 was nicer in my opinion. The Galaxy S also looked very good. The girl's going to give me a call on monday if she gets the new HTC Incredible S in. I might wait for the megastupendous Mk5 though

Hashcake - one of the reasons this thread was iphone or android was because I can't really say I am that happy with windows mobile. The version I have is clunky, the phone judders when moving screens and it's not that pleasant to use anymore. The Desire HD7 I was looking at today though seems better in just about every way possible :) However, now I can see the benefits of multi tasking (cheers Barney :D ) and I need a phone now it rules winmo7 out.

Suggesting I shift camera brands isn't that daft either, I've already jumped from Canon to Nikon as Nikon is quite obviously superior in every way ;) :p

So, it still comes back to how easy either is to sync with work stuff. The girl in the shop apparently has the non HD desire and has synced it with all her accounts "very easily". I'm probably leaning towards android but I'm still willing to be convinced either way :)

Android...

Apple benefits - Music works better, still more apps

Android benefits - widgets and notifications, the apps are coming over and Android WILL overtake Apple and there is nothing Apple can do to change that.

I had a HTC TP2 with WinMo 6.5 and went to the HTC Desire and it does everything I need and I'm struggling to think what more the phone can do for me. I do all my email, satnav, forum reading (native android app for this forum), read the news using Pulse reader, read books using the Kindle app, waste hours with Worms and Angry Birds.

You will find the same apps on both apart from Apple produced apps.

I use the iTunes remote on my HTC Desire and its better than the apple equivalent due to the hardware buttons, I can change the volume quickly, hit the search button to find an artist/album or track.

The hardware buttons give users and developers a better control system. The Sonus app is another good example.

The homescreen with widgets and notifications is where Android wins.

Once the Android tablets come out, Apple WILL lose ground (and will be overtaken by 2014), its a better system and Apple need to change some of their rules - they need an SD card slot on the ipad and other ports.

Apple perfected the Ipod and I'm not sure anyone can do any better. The Iphone and Ipad can be bettered tech wise and feature wise and they will lose out, they need to grow the ecosystem, but Androids eco system is growing and will grow faster and will win.

I have an android phone and find it painfully slow, I use this my iPod a lot it's far more responsive for web browsing and like this app for TP is a doddle.

What android phone?

One downside to Android is not all phones are equal. You could have a Wildfire or Legend with a 500Mhz processor or a 1Ghz processor in the current range or one of the ones coming out this year with a dual core processor.

You would need to compare something like a Desire/Galaxy S to the Iphone 3 or Desire HD/Atrix to the Iphone 4

the 1 i have is a galaxy portal I think its s15700 proper bag of *****
