Bug inside my 5D III !!!

Morning all,

Strange occurrence this weekend, during a wedding!

Looking through the viewfinder, and all of a sudden this enormous THING crawls right infront of my eye, scares me half to death! Upon closer inspection, there is a bug (ant/some kind of spider?) INSIDE my 5D Mark III, not in the viewfinder - but actually inside it somewhere.

Not for lack of trying, I cant find the bloody thing. Ive taken the lens off, done mirror lock up, taken the view eye cup out and the insect is nowhere to be seen. As soon as you put it back to your eye - there it is again, crawling around!!

It doesnt show on images, so im guessing (hoping) it hasn't made it as far as the sensor... but obviously I want it out ASAP. Can anyone give me any clue as to where it might be, and how I get at it?

When looking through the VF, it is "nearer" than the image if that makes sense... ie... when you look through the VF you have to focus really closely with your eye to concentrate on the bug, whereas the "image" through the VF is further away
 
That is the strangest problem I've ever heard a photographer having. Sounds like it might be crawling around on the prism? Possibly a send it to canon for a clean out job.
 
Probably between the focussing screen and the pentaprism or between the eyepiece and the pentaprism. Don't know if you can take the focussing screen out of that camera.

Try unclipping it and let it drop to the lowered position then use a blower. That would save actually taking it out.

I did that with my D800E last week which is a little bit harder, but having done it once it now holds no terrors.
 
I can confirm you cant seem to get the focussing screen out! Absolute nightmare...

I am not familiar with the design of these camera's internally... but Im hoping that if thats where it is (how the hell did it get there?!) can it get onto the sensor from there? I want to keep it away from there at all costs.

Also, when it inevitably dies in there (cant imagine there's much food knocking around in there, but you never know - I'd believe anything right now) I assume it cant cause any real harm (if its away from the sensor) ?

I cant actually put in words how weird it was to be photographing a wedding (around the part where the B&G were in the middle of the ceremony) and a bug crawls mm's from your eye... really creepy! haha

Thanks for the link, but unfortunately thats for the 5D Mark 1 :(
 
doing a quick google seems fairly common even back to days of film. most solutions simply involve taking lens off and leaving camera facing downward in hope bug will crawl out.
some say put an external light source near by ( not facing into camera ) which may attract bug out, other suggestions include wrap camera in sealed bag and put in freezer
 
I had that with a film camera. The creature will die eventually. If you're lucky it'll expire where you can't see it. :D
 
i had one in my 60d for a few days but it seems to have gone now probably died
 
might be worth trying face down in a clear box, and put some various foods/smelly things in there to try and tempt the critter out
 
Had this with my old 300D, they live in the viewfinder part probably mites eating dust or something.
They wouldn't like being put in a freezer very much I expect :naughty:
 
I have had this a couple of times in films cameras,luckily the focusing could be changed so got them out that way :)

Ggrrr!!! I hat that phrase. You can still buy film!!!

Many years ago someone told me that there was a very small insect which could survive in cameras by eating film emulsion!

How weird. I think, like Pingu666 I'd be tempted to leave the lens off and see if it will crawl out - maybe attach a clear plastic bag to the camera? With something enticing at the end of it? I hope it doesn't leave a web!

Its most likely dust mites, had a few in my old D700's, Turns out because I store my gear on carpet they must have got though from the carpet and attracted to the electronically sensor, they die after about 2 weeks but can be a pain, after that I had my office redone and got rid of ever inch of carpet for laminate flooring

there where tiny insects that could live in the balm or lay eggs in it, which is what they used to use to stick lens elements together

Yep, cos the oil on the sensor would've scared it away!! :runaway::p
 
Lets just hope its not some hardy exotic species that will eventually bust its way out through the eyepiece and latch on to your eyeball laying eggs that will eventually hatch into some sort of uber bug that will destroy all indiginous wildlife, which would then turn its attention to humans, and ultimately take over the universe.


I need to stop watching the Syfy channel.
