I did hear that the Sony G is a rebadged Minolta, but I've never been able to track down any on ebay.

Tis indeed a rebadged minolta lens but to be honest, the lens is of such quality that the price hasn't gone down much. Last one I saw on ebay was 6 years old and went for just over a grand.

Indeed. I believe it was a very highly valued Minolta lens so chances are those who originally bought them are probably still hanging onto them. When it 1st came out as a Sony lens it was priced at over £1800! It then came down to £1200 overnight. Cheapest I've seen it is Cameraworld @ £1179

you'll be very happy with the 70-200,fabs...as for it being a re-badged minolta,i'm not sure about that, but i don't think so as minolta kept hold of their optics division so sony only got the camera division.there are two identical lens on the dyxum site..take a look..

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/results.asp?IDLensType=3&offset=120

it would be nice if you could find one 2nd hand in as new condition and save a few quid..:naughty:

i got mine from cameraworld, and i was charged £1197 for it,although he did throw in a filter for half price.i was also quoted up to £1500 at other outlets :wacky:

it seems the revised price is about on par with the canon and nikon offerings...

Sorry, I meant Best Camera at £1179 :bonk: I notice Cameraworld are saying Due Mid may on their website.

I think there was a bit of an outcry when the price was first announced and that's why they dropped it so quickly!

i rang cameraworld(wells street,london..and colchester)on tuesday, and they had none available, but i called in as i was in london, and they had one there, which had only come in on thursday morning :woot:

sony seem to have a habit for overcharging for goods....

I may have a word with the chap at Photo Optix in Aylesbury. He is usually quite good at getting hold of things and is always happy to price match. Yes, Sony do charge a premium but I have had a lot of Sony products and have never had one break down on me.

also try kerso,he quoted me a very good price, but unfortunately i didn't get the quote until after i had bought it...

he is a member on here,so if you type "kerso" into the search function at the top of the main page, you will get his name coming up in several threads.just click on his name and you will get several options..one being PM him,or you can e-mail him with your query (y)

Cheers Stanley! (y)

Just an additional question. I'm thinking about getting a 2x TC to go with the 70-200 f2.8 (May well sell the Bigma). Would I be right in thinking that the widest aperture I would get will be f5.6?

you would be correct in thinking that the widest aperture would be F5.6.i was going to get the 2X TC,but after speaking to some more experienced togs yesterday,i'm gonna get the 1.4X TC instead which will still give me 420mm on a cropped sensor..

The only thing is, if I want to sell the Bigma, which gives me 750mm on a cropped sensor, I really am going to need the 2x teleconverter which will give me 600mm. Thanks for answering my question though. (y)

she was with me,and was actually telling me to get it.... :cautious:

it will probably cost me one way or another...:rules:

Indeed. When the missus encourages me to spend money on myself I'm very wary. It usually means she is planning on spending 5 times as much. And remember, she has a horse!!

They'd have to prise it out of my cold dead ha...................................oh, wait a minute, maybe not.

By the way, only spurious rumour at this stage but has anyone else heard all the new lenses Sony is planning to release? Supposedly a press release later this week. Will believe it when I see it, but potentially announced will be:

24-105mm F4 G SSM
16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM
70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM
full-frame, ultra-wide zoom, along the lines of the Nikon 12-24mm F2.8
New wide-angle, fast prime lens (possibly Zeiss)
New telephoto prime
Super telephoto prime

Anyway, in the interst of rumour mongering, thought i'd post here!

If this were to be true, which one takes your fancy? Personally, it'd be the fast Zeiss wide angle prime.

Looks like your wallet might well take another bashing Stan!

If there is a new super telephoto prime in the offing, just imagine how good your a350 would look with a big shiny white 500 or 600mm attached.

I know it's only rumours, but I've listed my kidney on ebay... just in case.

Must admit, the 24-105 looks tempting.....no, must resist, already getting 70-200 f2.8! :help:

I know we jest and they're bound to be expensive as it's mostly 'G' or Zeiss lenses, but lets just hope it's all competitively priced along the lines of L series stuff rather than incurring the usual Sony tax we've come to know and love.

I think Sony are getting there as prices have started to come down lately, but I still think they have a way to go yet. Especially given that the Canon/Nikon equivalents have IS/VR whereas the Sonys don't need it and in theory should be cheaper.

I think once more and more people buy into the Sony system, then the prices will come down (hopefully)....

It's been said / moaned about before (mainly by me!), but you would think as it's trying to establish itself as third biggest DSLR manufacturer, Sony would price accordingly. Having said that, i keep buying so who's the idiot? Sods.

Agreed and I'm sure that will happen, everyone I've come across who has bought one, loves it.

Stan, if you get the A700 you won't regret it! (y)

But people actually expect to pay a premium because it's Sony. Bit like the Stella Artois of the electronics world........reassuringly expensive! :D
