This looks pretty neat, and i'd expect it to hold the 650D with medium sized lens.

Yeah, you might be pushing it with the 70-200 (?) on the camera.
I've always used a hand strap, that was until earlier this month when i happened across the Joby Ultra strap. Its like a BR strap and with a clever twist.

Have a look at Q strap, you can leave the hand strap on and disconnect the neck strap.

I use a an Op-Tech Sling Strap and Hand Strap along with a Blackrapid FastenR FR-3 screw mount with Op-Tech Uni Loop Connectors.
It's a simple job to un-clip the two connectors on the sling strap and attach the wrist strap.
The Op-Tech stuff is really well made too.

A definite second for the optech solution
I have had a Sun-Sniper Steel sling for ages and really love it, it is perfect for city and such. however I found it becoming a nuisance when out and about with a backpack (always get tied up taking it off etc) or especially a tripod.
The optech sling strap is about a third of the price, and the whole setup is soo much more flexible. I have taken one of the sling straps and used two carabiners without the shoulder connectors so that it attaches to my ruck sac straps and bag. I have never been a wrist strap user but am sure if i was, the speed of changeover would be spot on.
Was hesitant about the clips, but they are truly solid and reading what more pros weigh on it, my needs dont even come close to their weight and money value trusted to it. The camera doesnt hang quite as nicely at my side as the sunstrap, and there is a knack to portrait shots without connectors in the way, but all in all I am converted.

Looking at the Optech straps, am I correct in thinking that there are quick release fasteners either end of the neck strap which attach to the camera sides ?
If so does the wrist strap just connect onto one of these when required or onto something else ?

I have been experimenting with straps - I'm a petite female and have a 550D.
I bought the black rapide strap for women.(They do a man's version without the curve in it). This is wonderfully comfortable and if I am going to carry my camera ready to shoot for any length of time, this is what I use. The only downside I think, is that you screw it into the tripod mounting - not really a downside until you want to lay the camera down or fit it back in it's bag, when it's a bit cumbersome, or put it on and off a tripod, . One time I accidentally left the strap behind, so this made me think I wanted a wrist strap in addition - just in case.
I've now ended up buying a Matin. This is a neoprene strap - very comfy, but without the curve for the female figure. The plus point for me is that you can make it into a wrist strap as well as a long strap. You attach the two ends to the camera strap connectors as usual, but then there are two clips to detach the main part of the strap. These two clips will then connect together to make a wrist strap. I can leave these attached to the camera all the time as my back up.
The clips seem fine for the 550D but I'm not sure they'd support a 5D or heavier.
I bought the Matin at my local camera shop. There were similar straps for sale, where you could unclip the main part of the strap, but you couldn't then clip the two ends together to make a wrist strap… so if you're shopping for this, check that they will clip together.
