can a Sigma 24-70 be used for macro?

As the title, can a Sigma 24-70 EX DG macro actually be used to good effect for macro? Anybody use one or got any pics?

its not a true macro lens by any stretch of the imagination only giving a maximum magnification of 1:3.8, where a true macro lens will give 1:1

yeah ! get a proper macro macro . It only says macro because the mfd is a bit closer than nonmacro.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that it isn't true macro, the lens is offered as a macro or non macro so wondered if there is any real difference?

The non-macro is HSM -sigmas version of USM where as the macro version is motor less and focus is driven by the body.

I got one, its hardly off the body, one of my fave lenses by far but more for general use.

I use it with my extension tubes for any macro, some pics on my flickr with this lens are here those with extension tubes say so in tags.

thanks Lisa I will take a look. I have the lens too but not really thought about macro photography untill today. Too wet outside to go out and try lol

Not quite. There are three floating around (although the first should be discontinued)

24-70 f/2.8
24-70 f/2.8 Macro
24-70 f/2.8 HSM

The current two are the "Macro", which is the cheaper one, and the HSM, which is the smaller £600 one.

The non HSM, non Macro one was replaced by the Macro version AFAIK.

Either way don't expect it to be any use whatsoever for macro work, it's an OK lens but definately not suitable for macro work (unless using extension tubes).
