Read different report's on this lens some saying not so good others saying excellent just wondering which might the more accurate?

Are you using it for the 60D?

I bought mine as part of a kit with the 70D and I chose one reason: video.

The STM lens focuses quicker and silently when shooting video compared to USM lenses. Otherwise I would have gone for a USM lens. Reach is great - essentially 7x zoom. Have noticed some vignetting.
 
From all the reports I've read so far say it's better than the 18-135 IS that the wife had. I was right on the point of pressing the buy button this week and part exing the IS version she has and then she says she wants a longer range for a walkabout lens so ended up going for the 18-270 VC PZD instead. I know the IQ wont be fantastic but it'll be good enough for snaps of the kids etc.
 
ive got the 70-200 non is L which is fantastic and have almost made my mind up on the 24-105 but wanted to see if there was anything else that would be as sharp 24mm is fine for wide for my purposes but need at least 70 at the long end
 
18-135mm STM is indeed supposed to be better optically than the older 18-135mm USM. The downside is that it's not particularly cheap unless you get it as a kit option for a camera.

USM? The "old" lens had a micro motor. USM lenses are fast and silent when focusing. Nothing wrong with the old lens though, I've shot some fantastic shots with the mk1 micro motored 18-135.

My own argument was the STM is quieter and quicker for live focussing and video than with USM. OP also has the 70-200 lens.

Apologies for any confusion. I was going to buy a USM lens to go with a 60D, then the 70D was released so was going to go for the same USM lens until I saw the videos on how noisy they were for shooting video esp in live view, which is part of the reason for buying a 70D. Not saying that USM is crap or anything.
