Canon 40D or Nikon D90. Help needed

just spend some time playing with your camera, reading manual etc. The camera is only a tool at the end ......

50mm arrived. All i can say is waw!! love it. So much to learn.

50mm is a bit tight. Can someone recommend a lens with a low aperture, less mm and doesnt need a mortgage to buy? A zoom would be ok.
 
Used Canon 35mm f/2 for about £180?

Zoom, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC new, £266 on amazon which is a bargain.

These are the best punch per pound for what you're asking, but low wide aperture lenses are expensive as a rule.

No canon or nikon fast primes have stabilisation.
 
Why is stabilisation a must?

The Tamron is a fast lens so can be used well in low light, and IMO stabilisation is mainly useful at long focal ranges.

For the spec you are asking, you're looking at the Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS. hope you have £800 left over for it!

What about the bog standard 18-55 is. Is that a good lens to have?
 
No, not really.

Average iq and slow aperture.

There's no point in spending x amount on a camera and putting average lenses in front of it.

I disagree, it makes a nice light weight standard lens.

The image quality on mine isn't miles off the 17-50 I briefly owned (which was faulty, but delivered some very very sharp pics).
If you're looking for a cheap standard lens to fill in focal lengths, it'll be a good option leaving you with more cash to spend on the primes.

But if you can afford better, get better.

We did say when you were buying the body lenses are more important... I don't see the point in buying a pro-sumer body then putting on an entry level kit lens...

It's not a *bad* lens in the whole scheme of things but it's worth spending a little more to get something that will give you quality you'll enjoy.

Like odd jim said, your best options are the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or the canon 35mm f/2

Or if you want to save more, the sigma 30mm f/1.4 is another option.

My mate has now seen my 50D and wants to know is it a better camera than the D90 as he wants to buy the D90 from the camera shop that offered me it!!!

I won't say better or worse either. They are very close competitor for Canon and Nikon.

I would prefer to use the D90 because i'm a nikon fan but canon fan will use 50D. So not much real answer ......

Only thing i can say is if the camera feels right for your mate then is a good camera ........

Also your previous question, i think you should take jim's idea on the tamron 17-50 f2.8

Is a bloody good lens for the price and also IS is not a must features to have to take good photo. We never have all that IS function back in the days and photo is still superb ........ I use a sigma 70-200 f2.8 non OS mkii and that have no stablization and i take good photo still. So i don't see why is a must for you. Is good if you have the extra $$$ to spend but is not end of the world for not having it .....

This is getting silly now! How many times have you already asked that question? But now it's your mate who is asking!

For him, what actually makes one camera better than another? Different people will prefer different cameras.

Seriously, just tell him to research it online, it's easy, you get balanced opinions and if he googles "canon 50d vs Nikon d90" he'll get plenty of pages doing direct comparisons so he can look at what's important to him and decide from there.

Got the 50mm as you know but was thinking i would like a longer zoom to compliment it. Any ideas for one that i can use as a good walkabout? I really would need IS as i am not that ridgid when taking shots.

Any ideas on what to go for? I was thinking along the lines of an 18-135 if such a model exists? 2nd hand would be good

But that is only his preference. As was told to you your mate has to try them and see which is best for him not for another poster.

If you want a relatively cheap zoom to complent your fifty you could do worse than the 50-250 IS , alternately there are lots of 70-300 and 90-300 kicking about second hand.
 
imo thats a bad idea as most of the superzooms suffer from barrel and pincushion distortion at either end

that aside you can get 18-200 and 24-300 (sigma, tamron., and canon)

As already advised, Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8. Non VC.

How do you find the 50mm without VC/IS?

Not taken loads of shots with it yet. Some blurred some very nice. All part of the learning curve.

Only problem i have now is the wife. She thinks the camera is too bulky for her! I can't argue as she will prob be using it more than me. She said she will have to join a gym to build up her strength if she is to keep using it!! lol
