Canon EOS M Series Cameras

I bought an eos m for this forum a while back(thanks bdigital ) I haven't had much chance to use it in earnest yet. First impressions are good, excellent IQ, focus in good light isn't too bad, in poor light it's not brilliant.
Touch screen is excellent, as is the 18-55 lens. It's also very small, I've big hands and I've almost dropped it a couple of times. It's easy to hit the menu buttons, especially when shooting with the camera vertical.
As for the ef adaptor, I've tried it indoors with a 24-105L and a 50mm 1.4, focusing is shocking, hunts, whirrs and takes forever to lock on, I've yet to try it in good light.
To be honest so far I much prefer shooting with my x10, but I'll reserve judgement until I've had a decent weekends shooting with the eos m.

I notice these are now availalbe for a bargain price (£349 after cash back) with the kit lens. Does anyone still own one and if so any more feedback?

Yeah I've had mine for a while and it's a bit of a mixed bag. IQ is great, HDR mode works well as for AF, it works well using the touch screen, but it's quite bad using the shutter button especially in low light. But it's not a DSLR, it is in effect a compact albeit a very good quality compact. Build quality is excellent, it really is a joy to hold. Problem for me I have 4 other cameras so the eos m doesn't get the use it deserves. If you can live with the shortcomings of the AF with the shutter button it's a great camera, especially at that price. The 22mm F2 lens is fantastic, edge to edge sharp from f2.8 upwards. I'd recommend the eos m but just be aware of its limitations, think of it as a very good quality compact with interchangeable lenses and you'll love it.

That's really interesting.

I have a Fuji X-E1 outfit which is fantastic but finances prevent me from buying any prime lenses. I did pick the EOS M up in Currys and had previously tried one in Jessops and was really impressed by the size and build quality.

At that price I could be tempted to sell my Fuji (lots of thought needed here though) and get the Canon with the kit lens and pancake. The adapter would also open up lots of cheap lenses to me.

Need to have a serious ponder. Ideally I would go for a used EOS but they never seem to come up - not sure if this id because people keep them or that they've hardly sold any. :)

Lol I put mine on Gumtree at the weekend along with my 5D mkii as I want to upgrade to a 5d mkiii !

No not yet, not even any enquiry, sold my BG-E6 battery grip and have had a couple of enquiries on my 5D mkii, I think most people haven't heard of the eos m.

I'm sure you'd love to do a deal on a Fuji ;)

Actually I was looking at the xe1. I have an x10 and its a fantastic camera, but I've got the gimmes for a 5D mk3 so I'm moving on my eos m and 5d mk2

I guess if you new to CSC and have bags full of Canon lenses, it makes sense. But for most who have ventured in CSC. The EOS M don't bring much more to the table.

I'm a m4/3 camp as well as Canon, The reason I like the m4/3 is that it's better than most compacts and it's my light weight option. With the lack of EF-M lenses for me I won't trade in my m4/3 yet!

If you need more specialist lenses I can understand that but for me looking at reviews the main advantage of the M seems to be that Canon have actually put out arguebley the two most important lenses(standard zoom, wide/normal pancake) with good optics without charging the earth. That seems to be an issue for Sony I'd say, they've put out more specialist lenses but the cheaper stuff does not look impressive optically and your paying a lot more for stuff that does, just look at the difference in price between the Sony 20mm f2.8 pancake and the Canon 22mm f/2.

I still enjoy the EOS M. We took it on holiday with us, my wife had the M and I had 5D3. It will never replace an slr but I could happily spend a day with it.

Just got one of these... looks quite good can't wait to try it out! Mostly for the wife to use but I like taking a camera everywhere and lugging the 6D around is a pain. I opted for the 22mm and adapter kit ran me £390 so not too bad considering I can use all my lenses with it.

Hi All

Been a while since I have been on this site, I did have a Canon 60D which I really enjoyed using. Change in life situation meant instead of upgrading I had to sell, so good bye to camera, lenses, and flashes :(

Just recently had a little bit of spare money so brought a EOS-M.

I've not been to happy with this camera as its just so slow to use. Feeling like a mistake buying now!

Anyone else used these, what is your experience?

I'm feeling a sell on and upgrade in order, looking at prices I'm thinking of saving and buying a canon 7D...... good move?

To be honest I loved mine and with the upgraded firmware it was just as fast as any other camera I have used, But..
I have now sold it last week but only due to me missing a viewfinder and that was the only reason.

I really miss a view finder!!!!! I found the focusing could be slow at times even though the lighting levels were good. Night Sky shots...... It wasn't very good at all as the screen was useless for working out if in focus or not!

Don't get me wrong the photos are good quality but compared to my experience with 60d and even my old olympus e500 it just left me feeling like I want to :bang:

Think I've answered my own question though ahhahaa

Nope

Better waiting for 70D release as the 7D now is a few years old.

Well I cracked and bought one of these cameras... WEX are doing the body with the 18-55 and the EF adapter for £369 which seemed like a decent deal to me. So far I am impressed by the camera, the AF seems good (it has the latest firmware) and image quality looks great. I have tried a couple of lenses on the adapter and they all seem to work well. I have just ordered the 22mm lens so will be interested to see how it performs compared to the Panasonic 20mm f1.7...

A quick test of a 22mm today and it seems to be a nice little lens - it is very compact and light but the AF seems fast and accurate (definitely faster than the focus on the Panasonic 20 f1.7). Hope to get out and give it a proper try this week so far just some snaps of the kids. Also tried the camera on a long lens last night...

Guys considering one of this to have on me constantly. Can anyone expand on how the AF has improved? Is it reliable now?

I didn't try one with the original firmware but have recently bought one which came with the current firmware. The AF seems very good to me, for fast moving subjects it isn't as good as a DSLR but it does do a very good job in most situations. I am very pleased with mine and coupled with the 22mm it has become my take everywhere camera.

Am I the only one still using the EOS M...? Would be great to see some photos from other users. I am still liking mine a lot, in fact I am so pleased with the 22mm that I am ditching my Panasonic gear (third time I have done that). Here are a few more of mine...

I like M,too.

The focussing of the EOS M has vastly improved with the firmware update.

I've just bought a Canon ef-s 55-250mm, there was a special on Groupon, for £109. I bought it to use on my EOS-M giving an effective 88-400mm. It feels quite well balanced on the camera, I haven't had a chance to get out and take some pics, hoping to do so this weekend. I needed something with a bit of reach for taking photos at rugby games, so hopefully this will fit the bill.

I will be interested to hear what you think of that lens on the M as it is one that I am toying with adding.

Got to try out my eos m with my new EF-S 55-250mm zoom. Unfortunately I had to shoot one handed for most of the shots as I had an unrully dog on a lead with me at the time. Surprisingly I only got a few badly focused shots. All in all I'm quite pleased with the results. Its definitely not the fastest focusing lens I've ever owned but for £109 it has surpassed my expectations.
I've just dumped my shots onto Flickr so If anyone wants to see what this combination is capable of here's the link

That's exactly my point, you could get a 600d/650d for less money but has more features (e.g. optical view finder, tilt swivel screen, etc)

You could also get a 1100D for half the price that is not much bigger or heavier (once you add a adapter to the M) and will work better with the ef lenses .

Yes I can see the attraction for mirroless but if I want to travel light I just take my 550D and all my lenses will fit :)
I know you can get an adapter for the M to fit eos lenses but it's quite expensive
Edit just noticed the posts about the kit deals WEX are doing does actually look like a good deal

The EF-EOS M adaptor is available for ~£106; which is not too expensive in my view.

I'll try and put some sample photos up from mine later as I had one from the release date. The firmware fix really really made the camera though, its just a shame the launch wasn't bad as it seems to have put a lot of people off.
Complements my 1D really well when I don't want the effort of carrying that around.

It's also very nifty for filming sports when coupled with the 70-200 F/2.8 as you can get nice and close :)

Well I am still enjoying using my M - have sold off almost all of my m43s gear now (just keeping the GX1 and power zoom) and am trying to decide whether to buy another lens to use with the M, very tempted to pick up a 55-250 IS. Also there are some great offers on the EOS M at the moment if anyone is still toyiong with giving it a try - Lowest UK price I can find is £339 with the kit zoom and then you can claim £50 cash back from Canon. At under £300 it realy is hard to beat, I am seriously considering getting a second one just not sure which colour to go for!

Yes, thinking of buying one from Wex as it works out at £299 after the cashback and they include the lens adapter too. Just not sure if I could spend the money more wisely on a different camera but with the same budget. If i do go for it I might opt for the grey/silver looking one instead of boring black...what colours have you got?

Andy :help:
