There now seems to be an ‘offical’ PDF leaked from Canon, showing the full specs.

I found this bit interesting, under the compatible lenses section.

‘Canon RF lens group (excluding EF, EF-S and EF-M lenses). When using Mount Adapter EF-EOS R: Canon EF or EF-S lenses (excluding EF-M lenses)’

So only 5 FPS with continuous focus and one card slot that only appears to be UHS-I. Not ground breaking specs, any idea on price?

I thought the hype was a mirrorless 5D4, spec doesn’t seem to suggest it is, although might share the same sensor.

Yes it has a lot of the major lenses but no cheaper 1.8’s and some of the great lenses are still on screw drive. I still feel sad about A mount dieing but canon and Nikon DSLR mounts are now also dead. Ok not quite I’m exaggerating but the time will come and it’s closer than we well I would like. No company wants to run two different mounts especially when the mirrorless camera is streets ahead* of the dslr models.

* ok streets behind as of today but the next gen models will turn that around.

I had the A99mk 1 and the a99 mk ii was a fantastic camera! It is a good match imo for the D850 and I so very much wanted one. As someone who was heavily invested in A mount I could see no new lenses on the horizon and I don’t think there have been for some years now maybe 5?

The A99ii wasn’t doa but it was born into a sterile world with no future. It had the intervals of the A7R2 with a much upgraded af system and the fancy new 5 axis ibis sadly it could have been the best camera in the world but when Nikon have lenses as good or better but a fraction of the price of Sony well one has to start thinking and I cashed in and got out!
 
What's happening is the 6DII will begin to look more attractive as the price keeps falling on it. If the new 'R' doesn't have anything over it like IBIS, or decent 4K, why would you buy it over the 6DII? for the evf? for the new R lenses? just seems a bit of a pointless camera now IMO. Making a FF ML just to say it's done ...

The 5D4 level version should have better spec, may be perhaps dual cards.

Nikon has cornered themselves with the Z7 sharing almost everything with the Z6 so can’t change. Taking a leaf out of Sony’s playbook.

It seems Canon has gone out of the box thinking a bit more, looking at the adaptors alone you can see they want to do more than put on EOS lenses.

I won’t be buying one but will not be selling my 5D4 yet either.

Same price, better sensor, may be Full sensor 4K/60.

Also smaller body better for vlogging.

I don’t think vloggers (who they are targeting) care much about IBIS as gimbal is all the rage now.

I sometimes question Sony's dedication to E mount, anyone expecting anything from them for A is optimistic in the extreme.

Not for me. I have no lenses that would fit that camera. Ive never seen the point in investing a lot of money in two complete different systems. I have a feeling a lot of Canon owners would feel this way.

For me the R will be the camera that will give me whai t need. The from factor of the M50, and the IQ of the 5D4. Obviously it will have quite a few better bits than the M50, but these are enough to make me sell my 5D4 as soon as i have the R settled in. The only reason oi go back to my 5D4 is for its better quality in low light, and the fact that i feel guilty not using it. I certainly don’t need it.

Thing is you also have no lenses that will fit the new canon either. Yes you can adapt one of your existing lenses to some degree of satisfaction with a wobbly bit in between your camera and lens but you can do that with your existing lenses and the Sony A7iii and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Well being as the ergonomics of the A7’s are no good for me I could argue the Canon is more appealing ;)

Well i have no wobble when using my EF and EF-S lenses on my M50’s, not even my 70-300L, so I’m not sure your analysis is right.

I assume the A73 has a flip out screen? ;-)

Yep, i do. In fact that’s one of the reasons I chose the M50’s over the M5. So as you can see, the A7iiii is not the best of both worlds for me, no matter how nice a camera it is.

Horses for courses and we all priorities different things. Neither the Z or Canon offer what I was after which is a bit of a shame but that’s life!

I didn’t say the Canon was appealing, just I could argue that it’s more appealing tan the A7’s ;) No point having a camera that doesn’t fit my hands :p

I find flip out screens annoying. I only ever want to tilt up or down but you can’t do this on a flip out screen without having to flip it out first, and then it just gets in the way :rolleyes:
 
The new Canon will sell by the shed-load, and easily take #1 position. From the leaked specs, the rumoured price has hardly been mentioned - $1900? That's the single most important 'feature' when it comes to shifting units. When that's combined with the fact that it'll work 100% with half the total number of lenses already in existence on the planet, it'll sell and sell and sell some more. That's what being the leading brand is about - it's not just about the label, but everything it stands for, built up over decades.

We've yet to see how it performs, though Canon has maybe been canny on price, if confirmed, and can use that as a cover-up if it's not quite class-leading. It looks like the dual-pixel PDAF full-frame sensor is all new, with an all-new processing engine. The jury's out on AF performance and dynamic range etc, but I'm getting a good vibe :)
 
IBIS vs in-lens image stabilisation. Both systems use basically the same technology and both suffer from the same limitations when it comes to shifting heavier components quickly and accurately over greater distance.

IBIS struggles with bigger and heavier full-frame sensors, especially with longer lenses that need more movement. In-lens stabilisation struggles with the heavy glass elements in fast primes. Six of one, half dozen of the other really, though there may be other pluses and minuses like cost, optical compromises, power consumption etc. It'd be nice to have the option of both though, each playing to their strengths. Canon could still do that with a future camera, because they already have in-lens stabilisation in most of their range.
