CLASSIC and important CARS - open thread:

Opinion is divided as to whether that's a VW or a Porsche. Personally prefer its predecessor, the Karmann Ghia.

Sure, this also depends on the Porsche content. The entry level cars had a VW 4 cylinder. But there were also versions with Porsche engines ... ---

Then Porsche reneged on the original agreement and all production went back to VW. Most of the early 6 cylinder versions I've seen here have Porsche badges stuck on the bonnet (mind you, so have plenty of the VW ones!!!)

That paint finish is terrible!

Hi, I don't know whether this is the original paint or a respray ... The whole car looks a little strange to me, starting with the wrong hood ornament.

Maybe, it fell into the wrong hands, had accidents, and was refurbished. I have no personal MAYBACH experiences, and do not know any owners.

It is more a high-end S-class (which is a very good car) but not a high-end luxury car to me ...

That paint looks very "orange peely". Possibly a cheap respray, especially given the "wrong" (?honest!) bonnet badge. Seems a bit strange that what was a very expensive car when new would be rebuilt like that - even a technical write off.

Hi, I think it is quite difficult to sell a car like this after a massive accident. So people try to keep the refurbishing costs low, which shows ...

But this is just the purchasing price, followed by the running costs then ... ---

Oddly, apparently not too huge. Mechanical spares are available through the drivers' club (and the things are built like tanks so don't wear too badly) or relatively easily fabricated. Damage that happens through racing is the same sort of cost be it an Austin 7 or a 4 1/4 Bentley - panels need beating and that's a specialised job! TBH, I doubt a new owner would use it much anyway - it's got modern race provenance and it looks the part so why risk bending it! A few hundred miles per year to and from local shows would be my guess - the owner probably has another that he/she will use for touring anyway!!!

Hi, I found this rather surprising, too, compared to what vintage Mercedes or Porsches cost, even here. - The purchasing would not be a problem for me, but fortunately I only have room
for 3 cars.

If the vintage car virus attacked me, I would try to hire a car like this. - I would have to overcome my stingyness for this, however ... ---

A late SS 100, a "C", "D" type and a glass fibre "C" type replica (for daily use!) would do me. Parked next to a replica Daytona Cobra (with AC etc!!!) of course. Maybe a 280 SL (pagoda top) for them all to look down on too. :p

Impossible to say from the ornament but I THINK I can just about make out Renault on the cap itself. Having said that, the body style doesn't look that Renaultish!

Excellent!!! You are right I would not have known. So, another virtual beer (or cider) for you!

Another rare RENAULT hood ornament :
