You don't need one at all unles the client or employer asks for one. Sometimes it just puts people at ease if they know you have one. There's nothing to stop you working with children if you have no CRB

Have a read of this

This bit being probably the most relevant

Because CRB checking is a duty on employers there is no mechanism whereby self-employed indiividuals can obtain CRB checks for themselves. If it is really necessary your employer or client will have to carry out the check.

It goes further than that; unless you're being employed by someone else to do your photography, you can't CRB check yourself.

Also, AFAIK CRB checks are not transferable between different employers. So you can't have one for, say, your other voluntary activities as a Scout leader and then use it in your sub-contracted work as a photographer (it's not banned outright, but it goes against government guidelines so any employer would be in a weak position if it ever came to court).

The only legitimate path would be for each photographic client (i.e the parents) to fork out the fee and wait the processing period before you take your photos.

A slightly different business but surely still relevant to the CRB check thing. It was four years ago so things may have changed. As a small business proprietor (Heating and plumbing) I needed to be CRB checked to join the check a trade scheme. There was no issue with me as a company director applying for the CRB check on myself. This was only the basic check not the enhanced one.

I applied through Disclosure Scotland. http://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk/apply/individuals/

Mike, there are a lot of companies that offer to do your CRB check for you but the CRB themselves say that the risk lies with the company that accepts the check, even though they haven't sorted it themselves. The CRB withdrew the rights of institutes, such as MPA and BIPP, from being able to do checks for the self employed as the institute is not the employer.

The bottom line is that as long as you are supervised by a parent/guardian or by someone who has had an enhanced check when working with children and vulnerable adults then you don't require a CRB check, and if the body you are working with requires it, they must sort it (although it might be at your cost in some cases).

Why is it that parents who drive other children to school need checks.
How is this done? who is the Employer?

they dont..

people have just gone completely crazy over it and people stopped trusting other parents etc etc.

whilst i understand why those that work closely with children need some sort of check (i.e teachers, play leaders etc etc) but getting another childs parents CRB;d to take your kids to school is just crazy, if you dont trust them enough to neeed to get some sort of check done on them, why are you letting your kids get into a car with them in the first place

as a photographer at no point will you be alone in the room without the parents or another adults supervision (and really you shouldnt be anyway, protect yourself and all that) then you shouldnt need any sort of check, however everyone has gone insane over getting everyone CRB'd

ISA & CRB

School togs do not really have to have CRB. As they should not not be left alone with Small humans. However a sensible tog will have the check as you never know when someone may ask for it. this could result in you not shooting a job and would cost you a lot.

Increased safeguards have now been introduced under the Vetting and Barring Scheme, from October 12th 2009:

It is now a criminal offence for individuals barred by the ISA to work or apply to work with children or vulnerable adults in a wide range of posts - including most NHS jobs, Prison Service, education and childcare. Employers also face criminal sanctions for knowingly employing a barred individual across a wider range of work;
The three former barred lists (POCA, POVA and List 99) are being replaced by two new ISA-barred lists;
Employers, local authorities, professional regulators and other bodies have a duty to refer to the ISA, information about individuals working with children or vulnerable adults where they consider them to have caused harm or pose a risk of harm. Referral forms and referral guidance are available.
VBS Guidance is also available covering the increased safeguards and the duties to refer introduced from the 12th October.

CRB means nothing, its totally worthless. As an EX firefighter I was CRB and Home Office P-2 cleared 20 years ago. Never been asked since. You could be clear on the Monday and offend on the Tuesday.
If your that worried about a tog dont use him/her. Better still simply take responibility for your own actions and care for the things that matter the most to you and be present. Personally, I would not want to be left alone with kids they scare me lol.
Having a CRB check does not mean you are risk free. If someone is going to offend they will. You have to reduce the risk as much as is reasonably practable. Sceptics would argue "They simply have not been caught yet" Its a sad world we live in of constant mistrust. Red tape and regulation that someone has to pay for.
Our most honourable men and women in the government the people we hold in the highest regard have turned out to be the most untrustworthy amongs us. Not all I may add, but most. School togs should not need to be vetted, teachers and helpers are around all the time. Its just bureaucracy gone mad.

thanks guys thats just what i wanted to hear..ive been holding back a little just because i didnt truely understand it thanks alot

I've had many CRB checks over the years from teaching at different schools. The CRBs aren't often worth the paper they are written on anyway, here's an example.

One year I was backpacking and I visited NZ and LA. I went from one to the other across the international date line and lost an entire day.

During my CRB check I had to write down the days I left and landed and spent in different places. Of course because of the date line I was missing a day. The CRB came back and was asking where I spent this day, I told them about the date line and the day didn't exist for me, it went back and forth and they wouldn't accept this reason no matter what. In the end I said ok, I guess I got my dates wrong and changed the arrival date so their records made sense.

Essentially I lied to them after telling them one thing and even though they knew I was lying they accepted it.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm just after a quick fix to a problem.

I will hopefully be doing some photography in the up coming weeks at some schools for the Daily Mail Schools Rugby competition.

I suggested to the man I work for that we try to cover earlier round, to drum up awareness of our presence and photographic offering. He put this to the RFU (who we worked with last year and know well) and they said 'yes, fine. Is Seba CRB checked'.

Now, I have been digging around on the web and on older threads lie this one looking for an answer... and well there doesn't seem to be a definite one on whether it is 'needed' etc etc.

What I am after is a form that I can point my 'boss' to that either he can fill out, or I can. Something that I can do to help satisfy the RFU.

Any help is hugely appreciated.

Unless you have regular contact with kids then you don't need a CRB.

So in your situation you shouldn't need a CRB. I often photograph kids football (my sons team) plus other school related stuff and no one has had any issues.

I have read that before, but I'm looking to get a check done to keep my 'boss' and the RFU happy.

Bob into your local Police Station Helpdesk and ask them there, Im pretty sure you can apply for Convictions and Cautions check there. I think they're called a DP10 and cost £10.

Obviously you'll need ID to prove who you are so take Driving Licences, Passports and proof of address. And they give you a print out (it doesnt include Driving Offences like speeding unless its things like drink driving ect). It was a few years ago since I got one, dunno if its changed since.

Get him to run a check through Disclosure Scotland. He'll be able to do a slightly more in depth one than you can as an individual. It takes about 6-8 weeks.

Yep the ISA el;ement no longer applies - when you fill in a CRB form now it tells you not to fill in the questions relating to ISA

That's because the ISA is destined for File 13!
