Cropped body advice...

Presently using a 5D/1 body which is staying;

I fancy adding a second Canon (cropped sensor) body at some time, a Canon 7D body price wise is outta my reach, so which Canon (cropped) body would be a good all rounder for about half the price of a 7D?


Used/second hand is fine, which model might fit the bill please?
 
Maybe a 40D or 60D?
 
TBH at half the price you're looking at a 550D/600D - or perhaps a 40D/50D. I'd recommend upping the budget to a 60D if you can stretch to it - it's got a few nice features over the older xxDs, and the xxxDs will probably feel like toys!
Personally I think I'd recommend a newer xxxD over an older xxD though, as you'll get better low-light etc performance, albeit at the cost of usability.
 
The 40D or 60D are much closer ergonomically to the 5D than any of the ###D range, that should make switching between bodies easier.

Peter, are you looking for a back-up body or something that will add something different to the capabilities of the 5D?

I'd recommend the 40/50/60D range - there are some 60D's now appearing 2nd hand, so worth keeping an eye out...
 
I'd probably steer away from the 60d just as it has gone away from the x0d range specifications as far as back controls are concerned.

I was looking for an upgrade from my 30d and was surprised when I tried a 60d to find the jog wheel on the back was gone and it was more menu based like the x00d range. The 50d still has the same control layout as the older x0d and the 5/7 etc as far as I am aware.
I stumped up for the 7d in the end and I haven't been disappointed.
 
As above, I'd avoid the 69D due to it being a bit dumbed down/consumer orientated compared to the 20-50Ds, plastic body, no jog wheel etc.
