Guys, i need some help. Ive just bought a Hoya R72 IR Filter and cannot get the custom WB to work on my Nikon D5000. I set it to measure the wb in the custom menu but it fails every time! I have the aperture wide open on my Siggy 10-20 f4-5.6. It just keeps saying 'Unable to measure preset WB, Please try again' Ive tried it on grass a few times (a tip i got from people who do IR) then on white card etc and i get the same result every time. When im doing it on grass i have the tripod legs splayed out wide so the camera is facing directly at the grass from maybe 6 inches. Ive tried in the shade, in the sun, everything...
Ive also tried spot metering and the main metering setting.
ANy ideas before i throw it over the garden fence?

Hi Philip,

I've just tried to make mine get the same error as yourself but failed. Every time i preset the WB i get the Gd (good) message.

I've tried indoors, outdoors, up close, far away, different colours, mixed backgrounds and i always get a reading / setting.

Can you get a reading without the IR filter? Maybe the filter is throwing it into confusion?

Hi ams, I haven't tried without tbh but will when I get home, I think it's the fact the filter is opaque and it's giving the camera problems. It's essential setting a custom wb to remove the red cast although maybe it could BR fixed in adobe camera raw. It started raining last night so I had to quit. As soon as I get home I'll be trying again :)

Ok, im back at home now and yes, it works no problem without the filter on. Data aquired it says :) Ive tried everything with the filter on and it still wont register. Ive wont from 10 seconds right up to 1 minute exposures and bumped the iso from 200 right up to 3200!

Maybe the best way round it is to take a photo and then manually change the WB using the +/- colour spectrum to give the WB you require.

After much routing around the web I've discovered that you cannot set a w custom wb on my camera with the filter (the reason why many use the d70 for it due to the weakness of the or blocker) :( I did do the ir remote control test and the d5000 could see the lights on the end but in fairness they were quite dim. I might just return the filter and stick to my full time modded Sony cybershot P93. The problem is it has no raw option which is hampering me a bit. The next option is to buy maybe a ir converted canon G11 or get my d5000 converted when I upgrade to the d400 when it eventually arrives. I've tried shooting with the filter on and changing the wb in acr but the noise is dreadful and I'm struggling to get the result I'm after. I found a thread on Flickr discussing a gimp plugin called ufRaw but am having trouble installing it.
Thanks for your input :)
