D500

I'm living with just one DSLR. The D500. I've let my D750 go. I'm having another go at long lens stuff. Convinced that this camera will be a good all rounder for me.
Loving it so far.
Most of my walkabout is film. I'll use a standard zoom for taking pictures of the Grandchildren with D500.

Hire one Simon, you'll be amazed!

I'm committed to FF at present and I have a Sigma 24-105mm f4 lens hopefully turning up today. I'm in the process of trying to get my pension early due too my ill health, if the trustees agree, I think there will be enough in the pot for a D500.;)

Also, I had some possibly not so good news last week, for the last follow up to my shoulder and elbow operations and a MRI scan. Looking at the scans, it seems as if I may need some spinal surgery (neck) according to the Shoulder Specialist but he's referred me to a Spinal Specialist to discuss with me, and see what the plan of action is going to be. So it think it's best to hold off for the present and try and hold the GAS at bay:D

Based on the D500 praise here I think I need to hire one as well or just buy one and 'try' to sell the D810 [emoji4]

Hope the health situation works out for you Simon :)

Sorry to hear about more surgery, fingers crossed for you.

We'll see if we can get you a camera that's hands-free :D

Some nice detail there Trevor - it looks a little under exposed on my work monitor.

Thanks Dave. This is the jpeg. My ageing Mac won't handle the RAW. I've got a pc laptop that will. When I get chance I'll revisit this.

I've had a quote from Nikon of £173 to replace my LCD screen. A lot less than I was expecting. I hope they can keep to this price, and they don't find anything else wrong, and they can do it quickly. ;)

The LCD costs £99.42 apparently. I was expecting 3x that judging by the chat I had with Fixation.

Doesn't sound too bad then, and it dispels the myth that Nikon UK won't touch imports

When I was buying the D300 many years ago I phoned Nikon and asked them if they would repair it if it were an import, even if I paid them, and they said no. I asked because there was a really good deal on an import. I ended up buying in the UK. That was why I phoned and checked again this time rather than just filling in the online form. I expected them to say no this time too, but it costs nothing to ask. ;)

I'm glad they seem to have changed their policy of not repairing imports. :)

If it were a normal warranty issue though, they wouldn't have fixed it under the warranty, as the warranty is not with Nikon UK. When there has been a widespread design or quality control issue, they have fixed them for free regardless of origin.

I just hope they have the parts and a small queue now. ;) And of course, they don't find anything else wrong.

I'm sure youll be ok Red, shell be back before you now it...

Just picked my D500 up, now need to look into the most appropriate xqd card to purchase to balance speed/capacity and cost. Any recommendations?

Looking forward to testing it out tonight and hope the buzzards and swallows are feeling photogenic! :)

Excellent, thanks Gramps. The xqd format is completely new to me.

The 1400X is similar to those used in the D4/D4S, the faster ones (designed for the D5/D500) allow for pretty extreme speeds which I can't imagine ever needing :)

That's good to hear, am interested in seeing some pics :)

Where did you get it from btw, as aren't they out of stock everywhere in UK?

Hi Wez. Battery charging as i speak. Did i see something about other enel15 batteries (eg from our D810s) not being compatible with the D500? Digital Depot in Stevenage had one in stock. I tried WEX first but was told two weeks.

The batteries from my D810 worked fine in the D500 over the weekend. All 3 of them, 2 were Li-on 2's and the other one was Li-on 1.

Apparently the Li-on 1's can be swapped with Nikon on their website for the newer Li-on 2's!

Nice that you managed to get the last one in stock. Wex have emailed today saying they have one in stock for me.

Although the Li-ion 10 batteries will likely work with the D500 they will run down like a ski racer!
There is an issue involving the new design of the Li-ion 20 batteries that means they are the only ones currently working properly with the D500 and they need 2/3 charge cycles to reach full capacity :)

Thanks Wez and Gramps. :)

I think I got lucky and all three batteries I have are the Li-ion 20's.

Glad to hear WEX have a camera for you Wez. I contacted them yesterday and they told me a week or two from placing the order. I checked DD this morning and, lucky again, they had one in stock. They also had one with the kit lens when i left the shop too.

I was really surprised and a bit skeptical that they had one until I saw it for real as every shop I called said 'a week or two'. Perhaps that was the standard line Nikon provided all their distributors with!! ;)

Well I've caved in, the D610 is going to MPB and a nice new D500 should be with me soon. So any tips to get me started? I see that people are having more success with centre weight metering rather than matrix? And would I be right in saying that I can (and should) have the joy stick press as my bbf single spot and the AF on button as group focus? So that I can go straight from single for stationary to group for movement? Any more tips for when the camera arrives?

I hope I'll have some shots to add to this thread come the end of the weekend.

Also further to the above, what's better to use for action/BIF? Group or Dynamic focus?

I got one of these to try: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/32g...s-exceptional-durability-to-water-temperature

Significantly cheaper than most available higher spec ones and I really, really can't imagine me ever needing anything faster!

Probably a bit of a noob question, what do the XQD cards replace, CF or SD? I have a SD reader built into my newish computer (i7), so would I need an adapter/reader to use these cards, I have USB3. Or, are the photos able to download straight from the camera quickish?.

BIF i use Group, and yes to BBF on the Joystick, I'm actually thought a half press man, but i do have it set on the back for single too...

For bifs I have found group mode to be good, my panning is not good enough for single point unless target is quite a bit larger/slower than your average bif.

I have also had success with the dynamic modes as well. I don't seem to do very well with the 3D mode at all.

Shooting puffins on Skomer whilst waiting to catch the return boat the puffins were flying around the cliff towards and past our position. I found that when I lost focus it would then focus on the sea and I could not get focus back on the bird as it always seemed to be locked on the ocean. I tried several settings with tracking lock on and also the various AF modes but ended up on auto AF as it seemed to want to focus on the closest object in the frame as opposed to the most distant one. As there was only Ocean and (hopfully) a Puffin in the frame on this occasion the puffin was preferable.

CF seems to be less favoured ... for those cameras that can use the advances then XQD and SD UHSII enable much faster shooting speeds and buffer.
XQD cards need a reader, I picked up a Lexar reader that plugs directly into the USB port for around £25: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B012PKX...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=RB5NC58GRXY8SEM8RTKA

As far as I know XQD is yet another card format, you would need an additional reader to read these cards out of camera, however the D500 has USB3 connectivity so you can can connect the camera directly to the comp and transfer images/files to your favourite photo editor. I used the camera USB3 until I got a XQD reader for about £25 on amazon.

i think the rule of thumb for fast stuff is
BIF etc group
Football the next 1 up
and erratic stuff the full 153...
can't remember exactly what the info said, but Thom Hogans book is worth it helps a hell of a lot.

Thanks for the replies regarding focusing chaps. Camera arrives tomorrow, looking forward to testing it out.

All this talk of the camera is making me jealous! I have loads of pics from my recent trips to Dawlish and Cornwall, and I want to go out again with the d500 and my 500mm....but with me having to move house soon, I haven't got the time to do this kinda stuff at the moment :(
