D500

Thank you Trevor. :)

Thank you kingo15. :)
FF will always have an advantage over DX for high ISO performance and maybe dynamic range, if you also have that option for certain subjects.

Over the last year or two I have been in a financial situation to have got a FF camera with a lens or two if I'd wanted, but I haven't really been tempted. For what I do, which is a bit of everything, DX is the best format for me. I don't want larger + heavier cameras and larger, heavier lenses, and definitely not two systems. ;) Some people have 2, 3. 4 systems on here, and good luck to them, and yourself. Thankfully I'm happy and content with what I have. :) You sound like you are too. :)

I don't think there is a better overall crop sensor DSLR than the D500 and I'm so happy that Nikon finally got round to replacing the D300S. :)

I totally agree the d500 is a great crop sensor camera I'm so glad I have one.

a couple from Farnborough yesterday.. a few things are clear to me..

1) It was a bit disorganised..being Saturday i expected a full day's flying but you pretty much get the same program twice in 6 hours ( with one or 2 additions towards the end of the day ) and
2) 70-300 is hopelessley short for airshows. That leaves me a dilemma - do i replace it with a 100-400 ( will 400 be long enough ?? ) or add a 150-600 ?

anyway, a few snaps

Magic. Well done, I've had no luck catching these super fliers.

Cheers.

I was in the hide for ages on my own.

Another photographer came in. I hadn't seen anything for ages so was looking on here and Amazon for a new tripod lol. When he shouts quick, hobby.

Lol turned out to be a pair of them. So if it wasn't for him I'd of missed them lol.

Its HOT here (South of France) and for about 3 months I dont feel like going out much but when I do I get shots like this.
It`s not just bugs I like to photograph but anything that catches my eye like this.

is there any bad 70-200 ? I'm thinking about one for the Wales rally in October as its overcast typically and last year i ended up at ISO5000 a lot of the time. I have a limited budget so it would be used...

Damian, Look at the Tamron G2 its a cracking lens and worth the money.

Wonderful image Graham.
Thanks, I am now thinking that I should have thought about several images to stack, this would look awesome stacked.
Not to worry though, it`s not far from me and they will stay like that for several weeks yet.

I had the Nikon vr1. Fab on crop sensor

Needed funds, let it go for £580. Much missed..

Blimey - that’s a great price. And in the ball park of what I really want to spend

MPB have a used and abused one for £589. Assuming it's in one piece and fully working (you get a warranty), you could always replace rubbers and get a new hood if you wanted to tidy it up. I think it's the best option at that kind of money. The Sigma OS is nice but definitely not as sharp wide open and I thought lacking a little contrast. Original Tamron 70-200 (non VC) is supposedly slower focusing. The newer G2 sound great, definitely the best VFM new option. But for less than £600, a VR1 is a stellar option.

yep, i've looked at the VR1 a few times. I'm umming and erring as to whether I "need" it or not as it would be used for drag racing and the wales rally....and in the mean time one of our PS4s has died so now I have that to replace as well as wifey's tax bill this month..

Grrr

Maybe I'll hire one instead, just to get me past this year

Here's one from last week, D500 and Tokina 100mm, flash in TTL mode.

OOI, Was this done on a specialist tog day Graham ?
No, done on a glass sheet [emoji23]
Actually, no, I find insects at work, pop them in a small plastic box I carry about with me and if I need I cool them down in the fridge so they are more obedient, not this jumper though.
The glass sheet is spreyed black on one side, this stops the double reflection effect.

Ah, makes sense. I only asked as I did a photo day recently with a Tarantula on acrylic that looked very simialr

New 500 f5.6 looks good. Nice weight (1460gms) But very expensive, £3.5k.

Reduction in size and weight whilst keeping the performance costs unfortunately. :(

I saw it in one of the videos for the new Nikon mirrorless cameras next to a 70-200mm, and how much they have reduced the size is astonishing as it is not that much larger.
