Yes
My laptop has died , no boot up or bios menu at all . A friend has some recovery discs but not holding out much hope :'( .
Was working fine yesterday down side is I have files on there that I never backed up so going to have to try to recover them direct from HD .
Any ideas what could have caused this ?
It's an Acer 9301 .

No bios at all could mean motherboard.
May be worth buying a caddy for your HD type and size and seeing if you can get the files you need off of it pronto.

Yeh my friend has one built into his pc so going to give it a shot . He said motherboard too but strange how it shut down ok and then just wouldn't start up again though . Shame if it is, don't really want to pay out for another one just yet .

I get power light , floppy runs but Hd doesn't kick in

no tried that already , but thanks anyway .

If it wont boot, recovery CD's arnt going to be much use

Does the fan spin and do the lights come on when you push the power button?

If not, its likely the power supply (either the cable itself or the PSU built onto the board itself inside the device).

If so,it could be a dead screen or faulty memory

If it makes a noise when turned on, use an external monitor to rule out the screen being bust.

My only other suggestion would be to remove the hard drive and obtain a converter which will allow it to be plugged into a desktop PC as a slave drive so you can at least access the files

Yep done all the tests and come to the conclusion that the mother board has died , I've managed to salvage HD so not a total loss . It's a shame really as it's only about 2 years old and everything else works . But hey if the heart aint no good..... So off to the skip with it I think . Already been looking at a new one and I think that I'm going to have to do some saving up .

Spooky!!!!!!!!!

I have an Acer Aspire 6920 and the same happened to me. No Bios Boot menu and didnt kick in.

Remove the back and disconnect the Bios Battery. If its like mine it will be located under the card reader, reconnect and hey presto!

Its a hibernation issue thats all.

If you confirm the mobo is gone and you are serious about throwing it in a skip, I'll pay for postage to get it. There will be parts that can be salvaged, and there is someone I know who refurbishes laptops that a charity sends on to African school. At least that's what they say  Seriously though, I'm sure it would be worth my postage donation. Just a thought - but READ CHRIS OWEN'S POST FIRST!

Thats one of the tests that we did an still no joy . What a headache taking it apart though . After taking the whole thing apart we decided to google for the service manual . Doh you don't have to take the screen apart to access the hinges.... I'm 99.99% sure that it's the mother board . Not the end of the world though still got my old desktop and a netbook just need to save up for a couple of months so that I can buy a new one . Just missing the 17" screen at the mo ( 10" netbook screen is a strain lol ."

Caddy won't work, well at least the vast majority of them. They treat the first sector differently, and hence all info get scrambled.

The way forward is an IDE cable on desktop computer, or Firewire solution with macs.

P.S. Do yourself a favour and get a Macbook Pro with AppleCare

Already considered the " take out all the bits an ebay them option "
I might get afew quid back hopefully . If not I'll let you know if I decide to just bin it though .

It does work not an IDE drive it's a SATA just plug it in retreve what I need then reformat and use as an external drive .

Cheers - hope you get it fixed or get something on ebay then. But definitely don't bin it! :)

A common fault with these if it has the Nvidia graphics chip is that it fails and lifts of the mainboard, you can get the chip reflowed, either with a proper infrared reflow station, heatgun, or oven. The first option being the most expensive, the last is free :) but at your own risk, have a look on youtube for nvidia reflow guides.
