Donington shooting tips

Hey all,

Making my first trip to Donington for the BTCC racing next weekend, so I'm after a bit of advice.

Any busy spots to get there early for? Where does all the action happen? Any particular corners that are good for "air shots"? Where are there big fences? Have the building works caused any restrictions around the circuit for spectators? What lenses to take? :bonk:

Spill your secrets! :naughty:

Infield is closed for the whole season apparently.
Not been yet this year, so not sure what else has change.

Get down to the old hairpin for some shots of the cars coming through craner curves, you'll need plenty of length though.

Uck. Could be rather crowded then? 300 + 1.4 TC enough for craner, do you think?

If there's one obvious shortcoming I've spotted from my attempts so far at Brands and Thruxton, it's a tendency to leave too much air around the main subject of the frame. Not great if you're using a TC :bang:

Typical.....WSB goes there in June, why oh why not Brands  it's getting like football and F1, the sports follows the money

Telescopes required for many of the good places. Old Hairpin, from the outside is nice, can get a nice snake of cars but to get up close you'd need about 600mm min. I went bout 18 months ago, a lot of the nice views were on the inside. Having said that Redgate, first corner is nice from the outside :) Still a good drivers circuit, but as already said not great for speccies or toggers IMO.

Is Donny really that bad for photographers? There seem to be some pretty decent shots on this forum from various bike races, has the redevelopment work taken it's toll on the good locations? I wanted to check out the BTCC as well but this thread is a bit discouraging

trust me, donington is not a good place for togs....unless you can get trackside you will struggle now it's fenced everywhere, i live 10 minutes away form the place and i won't go again, not even for the british superbikes at the end of the month !

Don't forget the whole Brands cancellation thing was nothing to do with MSV... the people pricing it out of existance were the SBK race promoters - FG Group!

MSV just said they couldnt cover the price rise FG wanted, because nobody in the current climate would take a ticket price hike....

My experience at Donny is from the other side of the fence - from a spectator point of view the only places I could see real shooting potential was from the infield.

Which is oficially closed - obvious exceptions will occur depending on work progress but don't count on it!

Based on this fact alone I have decided not to attend any fo the Donnington races this year. The good viewing spots are going to be completely packed out rather than just very busy.

Well, I've emailed asking if the infield is open, and mentioned it will determine whether I attend or not.

Whether I get a response or not is another matter... :p
