Can someone tell me if I have to install any other software to download RAW images from my camera.

I can find loads about RAW conversion but nothing about downloading.

The last time I tried this I just got blank thumbnails and could not find ut how to view them or where to view them.

Sorry for the totally dumb question :cuckoo::bonk:

If you've installed the software with your camera (DPP, zoombrowser etc) this should open up your RAW files no problem.

They've also just released new updates for these - see Canon's web

You can pull the files from your camera using "My Computer" as your camera will appear to be an external storage device. However, your camera should have come with some software on CD-ROMs that make this process easier and allow you to convert them to jpeg for the computer to be able to "see".

There are codec available for most raw file formats that you can download - just search using google.

So I download using the Canon software then ? that is where I am going wrong:thinking:

You don't need anything specific Briony. When you plug in your card reader you will see it appear as an external drive in "My Computer" (or on the desktop if you're using a Mac). You can then just double click it to open it and drag the files into another folder on your computer. I usually create one named by date and subject.

So what is the difference if I shoot in just RAW or RAW and JPEG?

If you shoot in just RAW, you just get a RAW file.

If you shoot RAW + JPG, you get a RAW file and a JPG

:)

Thank you folks.

Will have a practice at RAW today then I think (if the weather perks up and I finish the VAT:thumbsdown:)

If you download the canon codec for your operating system, then windows can see the raw files as thumbnails and open in viewer.

You will find that raw uses up a lot od space on your card, thay are very big files compared to jpeg,s.:)

Yes I actually did understand that bit in the book :lol: but I will delete as soon as I have downloaded them as just practicing today ( I need as much of that as I can get )

BRILLIANT, have printed it and stuck it in my book.

WILL YOU MARRY ME :lol::lol::lol::love:

RAW isnt as complicated as you'd imagine. As long as you have the latest updates for whatever editing program you use, then those files should open right up.
I use Photoshop and the version I have - CS4 still didn't recognise the D3x RAW files until I updated the program online. After that it was fine.
Unless you're going to use the Windows browser to look at the RAW files before you edit them, then you don't need that plug-in. I just use Adobe Bridge to do all that. Windows picture viewer is only useful as a quick slide show for someone looking over your shoulder...
