First D-SLR and autofocus nightmare

I don't want to offend with a simple suggestion, but are you sure the dioptre correction on the eyepiece hasn't been turned. That would make everything look out of focus on AF, but if you manual focus would correct this but would be out of focus when you get it on the comp. Just a thought.

The lens is not focusing at all, when we met on Thursday night I tried my lens on the camera and it did not even try to focus, when I used the lens Squark had on my camera it worked. Definately the camera as there was another little problem I found - and I only tried it for about 2 mins!!

Interesting thought, but I'm not that lucky. I have re-done the dioptre starting from each end, starting by getting the auto-focus squares to look sharp against a bright background.

Susie, bizarely enough I haven't had a recurrance of the aperture problem in Av mode all evening. I've been playing with the camera using manual focus trying to take a few long exposures (was hoping for a firework or two to go up) and the aperture and shutter speed both change exactly as you would expect as you scroll the various dials.

I don't suppose you can remember if we set anything strange when that particular problem manifested? I told canon that particular problem was intermittent when I emailed, but right now it's looking like a one off when we were at Tesco. It doesn't really matter with the main issue being auto-focus, but I don't like mystery.

It was when it was in Av, the aperture value did not show. When the dial was rolled the shutter speed did change so it was working - you had no idea what the aperture was set at!!

Yeah, I seem to recall that it showed 00. Ahh well, will see what canon have to say about it on monday morning.

That means the camera didn't think it had a lens attached, so it's no wonder it wouldn't AF. Could be as simple as dirty contacts, could be a broken connection internally.

Squawk sorry to hear your having problems, i also purchased my first camera (1000D) from canon_uk ie digital river which both lens and body were faulty :(. To be honest i had no trouble getting a refund which is what i would do if i was in your postion.

That is the only trouble with buying on the internet, i ended up buying from a retailer for peace of mind.

Quick update.

I've been in contact with digital river and I have to say the CSA was very nice and understanding. I have the option of either refund or warranty repair. The one issue with warranty repair is that normally the customer has to pay postage, but the advisor is trying to get me a refund for all postage costs incurred.

If that happens I will get it repaired under warranty, I figure its a refurb anyway, this will guarantee it gets a full seeing to.

Thread res of doom, but for a good reason.

Today I received the camera from colchester camera repair. It is now in full working order. I've taken a few test shots of the living room and everything seems to be great. The detail slip shows that they had to adjust the auto-focus and also gave the camera a full service at a cost of £147. All the things Canon should have done in the first place I suppose, glad I didn't have to pay for it :Z

I can't wait to get out there and play, I'm like a kid with a new toy all over again.

Much thanks to all who helped out in this thread, with a special mention to Susie for her help and kindness.

Seems like I have joined a good friendly forum, long time later than I should have. Glad to hear all ended ok.

Some good news at least. Canon_uk1 are going to pay the postage costs to send the thing off for repair.

The next question, where to send it. There are apparently 4 options, does anyone have any experience with any of the following. I'd quite like a recommendion if anyone has used these.

or canon themselves.

I think you might be needing to read this You are NOT dealing with Canon but a retailer Canon's ebay outlet shop, operated by Digital River, PLEASE read THIS
you should not have had to pay anything

I haven't paid a penny. Canon_uk1 aka digital river refunded the postage costs. Well, actually they are in the process of doing so, I have it in writing from them, something I insisted upon before I agreed to have the camera repaired rather than return it to them.

Canon do the refurbishment (supposedly) before they are shipped for resale.

This particular repair has been done under canon warranty, I paid the postage (just shy of £9) and they are crediting my paypal account. The time that takes to happen will determine the feedback I give, at the moment I'm 50:50 between negative and neutral, partly because they are yet to give me any feedback despite instant payment and lots of patience.

Really pleased its back and working properly - you need to change your camera listing now its not broken though

They will likely be waiting to see what feedback you give them!

Glad all up running now mate - enjoy your camera :D

Oh i'm glad i read this thread as i was about to put a bid on a refurbished 40D being sold by this seller saw some negatives on ebay which were similar in the item arrive not working.

Maybe it's just luck of the draw or something but it's canon rep thats affected.
