Flower lens hoods.

This probably a really stupid question but I'll ask anyway. I have a flower lens hood for my 18 - 55mm lens. What I want to know is, what is the proper way to be using a lens hood as when I attach it, then focus the lens it is no longer in the correct position (it's wonky). I don't even know if that makes sense to be honest but any help is much appreciated!

From the sounds of it you've bought a screw in petal hood for a lens that has a rotating front element.

What you really wanted was a click-in-place or bayonet attachment hood which would stay in place regardless of what the front element was doing and would leave your filter thread free for filters.

Yeah it is screw in. I wasn't aware that there were other types. Thought it was a bit odd!

Edit:

Could someone link me to what I'd need? I'm a complete noob and only seem to be able to find screw in ones!

I think there is no mount on the Nikon 18-55 apart from a screw in one. Perhaps change it for a circular one?

What's the full name of the lens? If you put the full name followed by "lens hood" in Google then you need whatever the Nikon product that comes up is (or a knock-off of it). Or you can probably find out the hood model number if you can find the specifications sheet for your lens.

"Nikon 18-55mm lens hood" brings up a product called "Nikon HB-45 Lens Hood" (it's a circular one though) so I would guess that's what you're looking for but check first.

Looks ok. shame you don't have access to classifieds yet, I think I have one lying around somewhere you could have had for less than that:(

Oh just spotted that one says the play link is for the mark 2 version.

Is it against the rules to buy things from other members without being able to access classifieds? I bought a camera on here when I had about 2 posts :l

Edit again:

"3.5-5.6GII" is that what means it's mark 2? Because if so my lens isn't mark 2...

I have a hood on my Nikon18-55 although its not a petal. The Nikon approved part is the HB45 and is a circular one. Got mine mail order from Harrison Cameras I think.

Is this your lens?

The accessories tab says it's compatible with the HB-45 lens hood or the discontinued HB-33 lens hood. The one PsiFox has linked is a copy of the HB-33 so it should be compatible if your lens is the one I've linked.

Your post count doesn't matter if you are buying, it's only relevant if you want to sell, unless the rules have changed.

Dan,
If you are going to order a circular one thats fine, but a word of warning if you decide to go for another petal shaped one, I bought one from Premier Ink, and I had problems with vignetting so make sure you can try before you buy
