Yes
I live right next to a golf coarse and further down the main road there is a lane that splits the golf coarse in half, now this is an ideal place to shoot golfers taking shots at bunkers/putting to the green with a 70-200mm f2.8.
The problem is will they mind and will they hear the release of the shutter because concentration is the key to any sportsman's benefit.
Has anyone here taken photo's at a golf coarse ?

i assume you are talking about rough photography then :D , sorry , couldnt resist , could you not ask first ?? , otherwise you risk ending up with a driver where you least need it

But if it's a public road he can shoot what and when he likes!

and then be prepaired to have balls hit at you. The attitude of I can do what I want when i want is a bit disrespectful to those playing, add to the point that a stray ball from a loss in concentration can be potentially dangerous.

Its quite unfair if people are in a competition for example to not really care about their game.

You won't sell many if they ain't happy cos you made em Bogey

Perhaps angry golfers would sell :)

I have one near me also, I know the chap that runs the club, will have a word with him tomorrow see what he thinks.

Very true
And it's about time we stopped pussy footing about with this and made people realise it. I'm all for fair play and consideration and really wouldn't want to upset anyone, but it has to work both ways.

And as for the suggestions that you're likely to get balls deliberately hit at you, I would think that's tantamount to assault at least.

Cameras are banned at large golf competitions due to shutter noise, except the pros obviously.

That's why you don't see many pics on here of Tiger woods in the Open!

All I can say is to wait till the club makes contact with the ball before pressing the shutter. that is the code that is accepted on the pro tour golf and stops you getting hit with golf clubs etc.

But if it's a public road he can shoot what and when he likes!

he can - but the unwritten rules are 'after they hit the ball'. That is also when you can get the best shot - and I've shot at pro competitions. You go to pro level tournaments and disobey these 'rules' and you're likely to get all amateurs banned. Maybe not a bad thing!

Right.

I play golf

I also shoot a DSLR

Any 'good' golfer will not hear any noise from 30 yards away, all 'bad' golfers here every noise from 1mm away.

My advice is for you to try out the hearing test for yourself. A few things you need to add to your test.

1. obviously, get another person to fire off your camra from 20 yards away so that you can establish if you can hear the shutter.

2. factor in concentration, you hear more when things are quiet (golf tourneys for example)

3. There will be other noises around so why should it only be the shutter sound that breaks the above concentration. (Monty)

4. Only Monty and myself have supersonic hearing ability.

Hope this helps, good golfers really do not hear anything, they are focused on only their swing and the ball.

This is bad advice - sorry - if you are shooting at pro level and shoot during the swing it'll be your last day there!

Doesn't anybody read the whole thread anymore??????????????

Where does it say shooting pro golfers???????????????

MOST SHOOTERS ON THIS SITE ARE AMATEURS>>>>>>>>>>>

WHY DON'T THE PROS REALISE THIS>

I was not giving advice for a pro golf shoot I was giving advice about what you can and cannot hear.

I PLAY GOLF, I KNOW

Sorry for shouting but some people need telling.

So do I but I disagree with what you are saying. Certain people are distracted by it and that is the important point. It's bad etiquette.

But can you hear it from 20 or 30 yards away is my point.

mind if I ask a question here....

Does the Nikon D300 not have a facility to switch off the shutter noise? :|( I mean any beeping sounds while the camera is focusing not the mirror lock up)

Ok so you should still ask but a demo of the camera working in silent(ish) mode (assuming it has one) might do the trick:)

:D

i shoot a dslr and i play golf, just not at the same time. :p

hmmm.....30 yards away..... i'm assuming that you are not hiding in a hedge but are in full view so you targets can see you as they approach the tee.
click away my friend and if Mr angry comes over to confront you, give him a business card and offer to sell him a print of his Tiger Woods moment :D

on another note some of you need to relax a bit.
the question is valid some of the responses are not.

had it been" i am a newbie wedding tog attending The Wentworth Wedding Wonga Invitational and i have a budget of .20p, what gear should i buy" then i could understand your ire.

this is a chap on a public road clicking recreational golfers that don't give a crap about your windscreen when they miss hit.

wow my d300 has a stealth mode off to check camera:bang:................... just kidding NO stealth mode

Do any of you know how far 30 yards is?

I am editing this post as I am unsure of the reaction to my question (inserts laughing smiley)

May sound silly but how about asking at the Golf club or the Golfers concerned, they may be happy to assist.

5dMk2 has a quiet mode!

I've used it to take pictures in church during the ceremony, no one heard the camera.

Do a test before you judge on whether you can hear from 30 yards away whilst there is 'OTHER' noise going on............

(for those not following or hard of reading, traffic noise, people noise, nature noise, mental noise, shutter noise.....Doh!)

If you have someone in the frame taking a put for a million dollar prize - believe me he will not be impressed if he hears you shoot - or move - while he is lining up the shot!

good point

live view mode on the 40D makes it quieter so maybe mirror lock up mode will help for other brands

I mentioned this ages ago, well a few posts ago at least,

Why doesn't anyone listen to me............

hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Are you still there?

it really doesn't matter - it's etiquette!

I wouldn't take a mod job anyway!

Has anyone here taken photo's at a golf coarse ?

from the OP - and YES I have - and all the advice I have given has been relative to that. It is about respecting what the golfer is doing.

:clap::lol:

i'm bored with this and it can get no better;)

OP

relax about the shots, even better approach the players first if possible as andyb1375 suggests then you can hand out business cards first :D

you'll be fine

But can the golfer hear you at 30 yards away?

Answer the question, please.

I know the answer by the way.

well if you know the answer why ask - just tell. . . unless you just want to stir it.
For good shots you will be a LOT closer than 30 yards - so your question is not relevant!

nope it's golf across a road, if a visible tog is going to put you off, then you shouldn't be attempting that shot anyway.

I wouldn't take a mod job anyway!
[bumkissmode]
don't devalue the fine job that they do by having that attitude
[/bumkissmode] ;)

I dont see how people feel that it is acceptable to disrespect any golfer at amteur level by not giving them the same form of etiquate which is widely accepted on all of the tours and any other event.

Im sorry but people saying, its about time people realised we can do as we want as photographers are the people who give photography a bad name/image as they clearly think what they are doing is of more importance than the respect of the individuals involved.

Add to the fact that if you ever want to try and start shooting tournament play in the future is it not a good idea to practice in a manner which you HAVE to use at an event unless you fancy being remove from the grounds?

At the end of the day taking photos is fun, but it shouldnt be at the expense of someone elses day!

didn't say they don't do a fine job - just not for me - and not likely to be asked anyway!

Surely you would have to ask the golfer at the time as you don't know what the background noise would be or if the golfer has sensitive hearing.
