Info Good Suppliers of Film Cameras/Equipment, Film, Repairs & Servicing

back on the OP , most of the usual suspects still stock second hand film bodies and lenses , so Camtech, mifsuds, t4, ffordes , etc (not MPB unless you want upto date lenses to use with a Nikon or Canon eos). You can expect to pay more than on ebay or with various cowboys, but on the other hand you get what you pay for and it generally comes with a 3 month warranty and as described (within reason , you've got to understand what the ratings mean so don't be expecting something described as exc - to be in minty fresh condition)

Personally that route doesn't interest me , as if I want kwalitee I use one of dijikal doofers - my film camera buying habits are much more to the spend 5 quid in a charity shop or on ebay and hope its not borked , but even if it is I can have fun messing about with it

I also like Arundel Photographica; but slightly closer to where I live is Clock Tower Cameras in Brighton. Small but well stocked; I've even bought 5x4 film off the shelf there.

Philips Cameras in the back streets of Norwich, a treasure trove for any Film fanatic, reasonable prices and Philip is a real expert on cameras of yesterday year. A Mecca for those of us in the flatlands!

Right you 'orrible lot, by your beds!!

:D

OK, I have updated the opening tutorial with an actual list of shops recommended in here and a couple of others from other threads. So, lets have more to add please so we can make it as a comprehensive list as possible. Need equipment suppliers [real shops and reputable online], none equipment suppliers of film, and any camera repairers/servicers that may be of use.

I used http://vintageclassiccamera.com to buy the Beautyflex and got a great service, anyone else recommend them too before I add them to the list?

Yep, ordered a large format Zeiss barrel lens and a 24mm Canon FD from them last week, delivered quickly and can't fault the service though I haven't had to return anything to them.

One I wouldn't recommend is MW Classic Cameras - tried to order a lens board and a couple of other bits from them on a Friday. There's no online payment available on their website so I called, gave my details to the chap who answered and he said that as I was calling at 10am, I'd get my package the next day. Given that they charge a flat £10 for delivery and I was ordering lightweight items (two lens boards and a lens hood) I awaited delivery on Saturday.

Nothing arrived. Nothing on the Monday. I was going to call them on the Tuesday and they called me instead, asking for my payment details. I explained that I'd already paid and was wondering where my things were. The chap said they'd call me back. A different chap called me back and confirmed that my order had been paid for and would be sent out today. I said I thought it would have arrived by now as this chap (I recognised his voice) had told me on Friday that it'd be with me the next day.

He refuted this quite aggressively, telling me that there's no way he'd have said that, they only deliver Monday-Friday. I said that's what he told me and he replied that that's how it is, now do I want this stuff or not? I told him to forget the order and refund my money.

Terrible website, poor customer service and his attitude stunk. I won't use them again unless I'm there in person as I find telephone heroes tend to be a bit more polite in person.

Yep, I've had a few things from Rob at Vintage, always as good as or better than expected from the description and keenly priced.

Dale Photographic in Leeds Merrion Centre

Process Supplies in Clerkenwell London for anything to do with wet developing etc.

Grays of Westminster - Nikon only, but a massive stock of used (and new) cameras and lenses

Servicing, Miles Whitehead (MWCameraRepairs) has done a few cameras and lenses for me, and if anything goes wrong he fixes it no cost.

Equipment, I've used Camerabase/Cameratiks in Morningside, Edinburgh a bit (and they also do repairs). They are a little pricy and not the most communicative bunch, but they have a fair stock of a wide range of cameras and lenses (and film).

There's a thread somewhere about film suppliers and costs. Off the top of my head, the ones we were looking at included AG Photographic, Calumet, discountflmsdirect, Mr CAD, SilverPrint, 7dayshop (both direct and fleabya) and Macodirect from Germany.

Define second for maco, great prices, quicker delivery than some UK-based sellers I've used and every delivery includes free Haribo! :D

Camera Centre, Morgan Arcade, Cardiff - http://www.cameracentreuk.com/ . They have a couple of cabinets of film cameras and lenses usually, medium format and 35mm. They offer a guarantee on the gear, too (3 months, I think)
I was there on Tuesday, and they seem to have a lot more s/h film stuff than they used to. I particularly liked the look of an Exacta. I bought a couple of rolls of Tri-X 400 35mm too at £4.99 which is pretty decent for a bricks-and-mortar.

Bit of a thread revival, but I found a post on 35mmc (a website belonging to a chap called Hamish Gill) that talked about a list he'd made of film camera specialist repair shops (further entries welcomed; I spotted @stevelmx5 among the contributors). Miles was there, and I added Cameratiks in Edinburgh. Hamish had a post about an organisation called Camera Ventures, set up by a Finn called Juho. He, in turn, is determined to save analogue photography for the future, and has a slightly odd manifesto-type blog post here. The gist is, he's trying to gather together and mainatin useful information like the list Hamish has set up, or as in this resource. It appears he's been successful already n doing something on a smaller scale, aggregating sales of film cameras in Finland. Anyway, he is trying to gather information via a long and rather annoying form.

Despite these slightly negative words, I think his heart is in the right place, and I have filled in his form to the best of my ability. Hamish's approach might be better in the short term, as you can see what's been suggested, whereas Juho's form seems to disappear into the ether while he works out how to check and map it. So if you want to fill in the form, you can't see what has been suggested already and will likely be duplicating a lot of stuff. Nevertheless I encourage you to do so; you know far more than me!

EDIT: #saveanalogcameras seems to be their hashtag...

Funnily enough, I filled in that form last night and linked it to this thread ;0)

Couldn't do it

I'm just too young, I was ok writing one word answers like "none" or ticking a box, but once we got on to compiling dot com lists I threw in the towel, and that is going to happen a lot...:(

Ditto - I just got to the third page and found it was going to be too hard going.

Hello, not sure if this goes here because it is mostly about repair shops in Germany...

Browsing the net I've found this link: http://www.4photos.de/camera-diy/kamerareparatur.html

It is a list ordered using the first digit of the Zip Code / Postal Code (Postleitzahl), e.g. the Munich postcode starts with 8. You can find all the regions here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_codes_in_Germany

The list is from 2014, so some of the shops do not exist anymore or changed location, but I think it would be useful for those with German cameras, especially if made in the old East-Germany. It also includes some shops in Austria and Switzerland.
