At first, Apple told me it could take until the 19th. Two days later,
an em@il confirmed that it will be delivered today. :) :):)

Let's have a look. The 1TB SSD is confirmed and the 16GB RAM
as well… but wait, what is that Mickey Mouse thing? I got the wire-
less small German keyboard instead of the extended German one.
Worse still, it's a German qwerty and not a German qwertz!

I call Apple. The girl was in Portugal, transfers me to tech support
— this guy was in Ireland — to be re-transfered to sales support.
That guy was in Germany, had a strong accent from India saying:

"I too prefer the extended keyboard… Please give me a second…
You're still there? Here's what I got for you: I'll send you immedia-
tely the qwertz extended German keyboard… and just keep the
little one, maybe helpful some day! How's that?" :p
Thank you very much, Sir and happy holidays!

I did a set it up and installed — guess what — sure, Capture On Pro
followed by Affinity Photo… and test drove that classic beauty. CO Pro
jumped up and invaded the 27" cool 5K screen in a second and is running
soooo smoothly… a delicious experience… mind you, AP did the same!

Then, to top it all off, I calibrated the monitor… lost time it was! The darn
thing was off by .01 magenta!!! …pure metric, I don't see the difference!

Perfect, now let's get to work!

I love it when Christmas comes early!! I've been spending some money too - but not as much as you. A D850 and a posh Apple Mac? Can you be my Sugar Daddy?

I got a Sirui G-10KX Camera Tripod Ball Head to hold my camera in a more controllable way on my tripod. The ball head I have at the moment is dangerous - loosen it a little, and my camera flops forward out of control!! Looking forward for it to arrive in the next few days.

I love my iMac. I did upgrade to 32gb and there’s nothing I throw at it that it can’t handle.

Enjoy!!!!

Not yet through the shopping spree, Gill.
I got to expend by two lenses and a back
my Phase One system and THAT will be
a lot heavier!

I only do photography and no video work. I think the
16GB I got will do just fine. :) – no gaming either!

you got a good result there Daniel, Apple might be a bit more expensive than "some other brands" but you have to put your hands up to their Customer Service :)

FWIW I have only ever know Mac OS and after seeing my friends PC and how he goes about using it I'm rather glad.

after seeing my friends PC

Right Paul, I do have most of my students on PCs and to
go through the lessons on TeamViewer is not a nicer thing
in my days… and even in Capture One it is not all the same!

There are a lot of people going back to windows. I went the other way a couple of years ago and I can’t see myself ever going back to windows now. Sure you can’t mess with the OS as much as windows, but to be honest, you don’t need to. It just works, and my machine flies. I also love the connectivity between all my devices.

Santa has been good to you Daniel!

I've had my iMac for about 6 or 7 years now and it's still going strong. It came with 4gb ram and started slowing down a lot when I was doing multiple things at once (scanning film, Photoshop, Lightroom, Spotify etc) so I put some more in which took about 30 seconds. Now it runs like a dream again. I'm pretty anti Apple when it comes to phones and tablets etc, but I'll always buy a Mac over a PC.

"…it just works!" were the favourite words of Jobs.
He was right then and he still is!

The best feature for my line of work is dependability.

Without a doubt, 16gb will be super fast for what you need it for.

Yep… with file sizes climbing to around the 80MB for the
D850 and well over that with the PO backs…

Same thing here, my MacPro is of 2008 and doing fine.
I will have to retire it somehow as new cameras and new
connections made it obsolete before failing in any way… :grumpy:

Christmas has come early for me too, aafter getting a really nice bonus at work I've just upgraded my 2009 27" 16GB iMac to a new Mac Pro 32GB & a BENQ 32" monitor, the transition was seamless and the speed of the thing is frightening, now I just need to shoot some images!

Major congrats kodiak, you'll love your new toy, the 1tb ssd upgrade is well worth it, My imac is three years old now, it has 1tb ssd, 32GB ram, 4gb video ram, it flies and makes mincemeat of my editing, well worth the expense and a sound investment in my opinion.
cheers
tony

…ain't that WHY you bought it in the first place! :)

Have a good time!

you're lucky - I got an Amazon echo dot yesterday - not sure what to do with the "bloody" thing!!!!:grumpy:

Amazon echo dot

Echo Dot is a voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music,
control smart home products, provide information, and more.
You must have Alexa for sure?

that's right Daniel, but now I find that if I want to use it fully I will need to buy other stuff - trying to get it to work with my Wi-fi speakers at the moment and play the music that I have on my laptop using airplay, (Apple airplay), but I am not having much luck.

I'll have to ask my daughter in laws 2 year old niece who seems to be able to work wonders with Alexa!!

I have a similar spec I.mac 27 inch ,ssd, nvidia graphics card etc .it takes a couple of minutes to load a few hundred raw files into l.room incredibly fast machines

just did a full spec check up Daniel it goes like this
27 inch i.mac
3.5 intel core i7
16gb DDR3
nvidia geforce gtx 780m 4gb

as for card reading I use a lexar usb 3 reader that takes sd/cf cards far faster than I need ,and pics load up lightning fast

This whole move is conséquent to the purchase of the
D850 that uses a XQD 128 GB. I do not intend to use
USB 3 but Thunderbolt 3.

Is your the 5K version?

are they now a lot faster .. mine is late 2014, with the following spec

Retina 5K, 27"
3,5GHz Intel Core i5
24GB 1600 MHz DDR3
1TB Fusion Drive

Graphics Card is only 2GB

they are in as much as the memory is now DDR4, SSD's are way faster than the fusion drives and the bus throughput has been upped as well, and the GPU has now 4gb minimum. Go on, spoil yourself :)

Yes, as Paul said, the SSD is doing a lot. Then
there are the i7 processors and Thunderbolt 3
for data transfer… all together, crazy pipeline!

We just got our new 27" iMac. 4.2Ghz processor, 32GB RAM, 8GB graphics and the 3TB fusion drive. What a great piece of kit. Took a few hours on the text-chat-line with Apple support to get the network figured out (turns out our router had installed its own DNS settings that were rubbish. Switched to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.8.4 and we are good to go). Running Lightroom for photo editing and it is great.
