Hi all,

I have noticed that my images are coming out grainy / not very sharp

The picture attached was taken on a Nikon D40 with the kit lens and SB600 (on camera)

At first, i thought this was just at night, but seems to be all the time now?

Not sure if I have messed up with the setting in some way

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,

Adam

If the images are grainy it usually means the ISO is quite high, have you got it set to auto?

Just looked at the exif on the picture and its 1600 which is high enough to add grain.

Exposure 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 55 mm
Focal Length 55.0 mm
ISO Speed 1600

Very nice photo, just double check your ISO noise. I'm pretty sure D40's have lower ISO speeds, like 50, 80 or 100 or something.

Best thing to do is recreate the light, not get the camera to search for it. Invest in some lightboxes or something! :)

Cheers mate. I'm going to be investing in a lightbox sort of thing soon.

As for the ISO, I think the d40 only goes to 200

In fact it's from 100 - 3200 ISO

The Nikon D40, which the OP has, goes from ISO 200 - 1600 with a boost to 3200.

I think folks are getting confused with the Canon 40D?

It's a nice idea for a shot and well taken.

As well as the comments above about more light, I don't think you need to be on f8 aperture. You could probably get away with the being f5.6 and still have plenty of DOF. I think that's what your lens will go down to at 55mm focal length.

This will allow you to lower your iso and keep the same shutter speed.
