Heat Alert

Of course there’s a totally different way to look at it , when we get an illness we take medicine to cure it , …. So what if the actual planet falls into the Gaia theory and is a living entity and we are irritating it , so we get heatwaves , earthquakes ( more and more frequently of late ) volcanic eruptions, storms ,hurricanes etc etc . It’s almost like the planet was trying to get rid of a virus … humanity

Can we do anything positive?

Personally I am vegetarian, not primarily for environmental reasons but reduction methane production is a good thing.

I'm very careful with recycling. I make sure what goes in the green bin should go there and it is clean and not mixed material things like removing plastic from window envelopes, no take away pizza boxes etc.

I do drive to work but I see that as being on my employers shoulders as I word work from home by choice. But I keep my car well maintained and it's an order car. The longer a car is in use the more the carbon cost of making it is mitigated (other opionons exist).

I don't buy the cheapest electricity I use a 100% sustainable supplier. They actually pin the price to the major supplier in my area so it's no more expensive.
I use Ecotricity (I also use Ecotalk for my cell phone contract) if you would be interested in using Ecotricity and you pm me I have a referral code which would save us both a small amount of money.

When I lived and worked in places suitable I cycled and used public transport. I also did a week long training course on bike repairs and volunteered at a free to use community workshop for a few years which was fun.

In summary you might want to consider
Eating less meat
Checking what can be recycled and how to "prepare" it.
Maintain your car fully
Perhaps cycle
Help out at a grass roots project to keep old things working cheaply especially if you have skills
Switch to a sustainable utility supplier

One thing you can do today is put a shallow dish of water out fir the garden animals, maybe not green but it's nice to be nice.

And we also cannot ban entitlement.

Dave

There was a phone -in on LBC today. about that 7.00pm government SMS .??... alert re not having BBQs,bonfires etc and whether it should have been used because ,it seems, it's for serious threats. Considering that several homes in Stourbridge have been destroyed by what started as a grass fire it seemed an appropriate use to me.

Anyway, I'v responded to your post because a caller said that police had received 999 calls reporting neighbours who were having a BBQ and one had a bonfire going where there was a large area of dry grass quite close by. Someone else was setting off fireworks in their back garden .I think your point re entitlement is a very good one. I hadn't thought of it like that. My thoughts just extended to idiots ,the irresponsible and an afterthought..those who just don't give a toss. fire expert said that embers can travel on the wind up to 23 miles and can still initiate a fire after landing on dry grasses or in woodland. Another caer said that yesterday, he was stuck in traffic on the rosd from Swindon to Plymouth snd people in cars were throwing cigarette ends out of the car window..not just the filter but a piece of burning tobacco. In Australia a caller said that despite its terrible record of fires people were still careless. Firework displays, other than official ones at particular venues are banned as are BBQs at certain times.

My view on where we are with entitlement/carelessness.

It's a bit disconnected.

2022. 18 houses lost in Wennington, to fire.
"Oh my god, what is happening, those poor souls."

2026. 38 houses lost in Stourbridge. 5 houses lost in Caerphilly
"Totally shocking! Something must be done!"

202x. Fires, blah blah blah. Some homes burnt. Blah Blah Blah.

As to the phone alerts ,big fuss here as it was two messages the first one in Welsh ,followed ten minutes later by the English version . Just think if it had been a real emergency. Apparently the 999 number was jammed by people who can’t read Welsh .total Plaid Cymru arrogance

Yep exactly we got one in Welsh, which is really handy as we dont speak Welsh

My wife and I just feel its gone beyond sensibility, every day on the news, we get some viewers may find it upsetting.
Weather wise, its always some warning, the maps they show makes it look like every thing is ablaze.
Talk about doom and gloom, and this not including wars or politics.
Some people must be near scared to death, the younger generation must think that is has always been this way.
Drama is now made out of a shovel of coal so to speak, reality has been turned into unrealistic shows and the real reality and facts are buried within all if this things.
Do you think we will get weather lockdowns eventually ????????

It is the reality though can’t just bury our heads in the sand , we have had no significant rain in our area for pretty much 2 months and it’s worse in parts of Europe

And a look at today’s papers shows only the Observer with a climate/wildfire front page story.

Telegraph - water companies to charge more in a drought…
Daily Mail - phone alert threw everyone into panic and was a Burnham mistake
Express - triple lock story and, of course, Diana.

Anyone ever watch the film “ the day the earth caught fire “ do love these premonition movies ‍‍

Indeed.

The climate is changing but what matters is the question of why? A vociferous minority claim that it's all the fault of humans. This is to ignore the evidence that, in the long term, the planetary temperature has swung between both far hotter than now and far colder/

To sum up: the climate of the planet is changing. The evidence is that it always has changed and it is reasonable to assume that, so long as it has an atmosphere, it always will change. Most of these changes we might assume will be minor and short term; while others will be bigger and some will be longer term. Such, so far as we know, is the life of a planet with an atmosphere.

have you seen my chart posted above?
How do you explain the measured temp changes since 1880 ?

Its not a minority but the majority of climate and similar scientists , I believe that the evidence is overwhelming for it being man made
Yes the climate has always changed but its the rate of change which is the issue at the moment too quickly for nature to evolve and adapt

yep 100% you only have to extrapolate the measurements on the the chart above to come to the conclusion we are literally in a lot of trouble now not in 10 or 20 years time.

Scientific consensus has been reversed many times, as better data has been acquired.

Our long term data indicates that average temperatures are constantly changing, bearing in mind that short term changes are near impossible to identify, past the life span of currently living trees.

Your chart shows a change of (roughly) 1.1 degrees celsius over 100 years and doesn't show any of the annual or monthly changes over its full span.

It looks impressive until a reader applies some commonsense and realises that the figures used are meaningless, beecause they are contextless. For them to be useful in this discussion we would need to be able to see the temperature at various fixed points within each year plus the context of the source(s).

It simply serves to obfuscate what little information we possess.

On the contrary, I'm very interested in seeing the truth of any claim being put forward, where such is possible.

The problem, as I see it, is that there are various groups who have taken up fixed positions, which may be wrong or may be right. The problem is that the detail is what really matters here, because we know that the climate changes but we really cannot predict it at our present level.

It really doesn't help that too many people, deliberately or otherwise, confuse weather forecasting with our understanding of the planet's climate.

As we sit and discuss the ins and outs of this heat event that we have had or are having.
It has dawned on me that, the question is not, is it getting hotter or not.
The question is why, and why don't we have a definitive answer, why is there a doubt at all.
All the experts can not even agree.
But are we the public being informed with all the facts, is there facts and reasons that for some reason we cant or should not be told about what's happening.
And of course what will eventually happen, and how the public will manage!

You never hear about underground aquifers and the state that they are in, but they are a good indication about how things are.
I did hear about one in the USA that has been slowly drying up over the last few decades.
Apparently those farmers have to drill deeper and deeper to get water for crops.

So what about the UK, I just feel that things are to relaxed considering what is happening with all of this.
I am not saying any one should panic, but we need to be better informed about how to prepare if these events really do start to impact on our day to day lives.

I was more refereing to that fact you are not interested in anything positive?
you just laugh and smirk about anything that is put forward that could/would be good or positive in the world.

you are the true definition of a "hater"

It would be good to have Andrew actually give some scientific fact, rather than the nebulous Trumo-type statement "Climate has always changed". I want to know what sunspots, volcanic eruptions, meteor strikes, etc. there have been to cause this unprecedented rise in planetary temperature.

he is just a Trump you are right there, its dull and in the future woman like him will simply be looked down upon as those that chose to pray at the idol of...... convenience...

I do hope that DEI does not dictate we all get 46 alerts in different languages.
Good point..Urdu..Bengali..? Quite a few of those people don't speak english despite having lived here for years. The elderly, I think.

In 2018, a government alert in Hawaii sent to TVs, radios and mobile phones caused panic when it accidentally sent out a warning of an incoming ballistic missile.

I heard Nick Ferrari..LBC Radio.. interviewing a women this morning about the alert on Friday and she criticised it being sent out for that purpose as most people know not to light BBQs and camp fires etc and it might end up like 'cry wolf'. It wasn't what she said that annoyed me but the inflection in her voice as though she was talking down to listeners..It had a ring of familiarity to it but I couldn't place it until Nick Ferrari said.."Thank you for your view...that was Annunziata Mary Rees-Mogg".....She's the .younger sister of 'im....

I heard on the radio.. re this ..that 80% of people living in Wales don't speak welsh.
Yes thats most likely accurate I can’t think of anyone we know who speaks fluent Welsh , we live in north east wales

How much has the world population increased since 1880? Surely if it’s a large increase all the homes also increased create more drama to the planet due to increased levels of energy produced/used by these increases.
On a sour note it’s overcast, cool and rain expected here! How much are the unbelievably poor water companies contributing to water shortages due to leaks etc, is it time to renationalise and leave the share holders to pay off the debts.

Me as well same area most locals I know ( quite a lot after 15 years on the taxis ) either speak a variation of scouse ,a fair amount of cockney , polish , and Turkish , rarely hear Welsh till you get near Anglesey

But how do we know with total certainty how fast extreme climate change occurred , take the younger dryas’s as a guide it ended 10,000 years ago after lasting apparently for circa 1000 years but what we don’t know is how long it took to establish itself ,did humans at the time have the opportunity to move further south away from the advancing ice or did it start with one hard winter that never went away , did rising sea levels at the end give rise to the flood of the bible , flooding the Black Sea valley . Once you start thinking there’s so many questions and to few answers

They are theories that it is hot periods that trigger or cause ice ages.

maybe but over what time period 1 year , 10 years , 100 years or more in the 1700's ?the thames froze over with markets being held on it ,not seen that in my 80+ years on the planet will it happen again . who knows perhaps when hell freezes over is the appropriate response

We had a tiny bit of rain this morning. Not enough to even wet the drive or slabbed path - the residual heat evaporated it on contact!

Very unlikely.

A wiki quote...
Several causes have been proposed: cyclical lows in solar radiation, heightened volcanic activity, changes in the ocean circulation, variations in Earth's orbit and axial tilt (orbital forcing), inherent variability in global climate, and decreases in the human population (such as from the massacres by Genghis Khan, the Black Death and the epidemics emerging in the Americas upon European contact).
and another

The River Thames frost fairs were held on the tideway of the River Thames in London, England in some winters, starting at least as early as the late 7th century until the early 19th century. Most were held between the early 17th and early 19th centuries during the period known as the Little Ice Age, when the river froze over most often, though still infrequently. During that time the British winter was more severe than it is now, and the river was wider and slower, further impeded by the 19 piers of the medieval Old London Bridge which were removed in 1831.

Even at its peak, in the mid-17th century, the Thames in London froze less often than modern legend sometimes suggests, never exceeding about one year in ten except for four winters between 1649 and 1666. From 1400 until the removal of the medieval London Bridge in 1831, there were 24 winters in which the Thames was recorded to have frozen over at London.

So, possibly, would temperature came down because of a drop in human population. But the drop in temperature stopped, then temperature has massively increased.

The most likely explanations seem to be:
CO2 released into the atmosphere - a massive majority of climate scientists believe this to be the case.
Population growth

Neither of these can be considered to be natural for the earth, so saying "climate has always changed" to explain the sudden increase doesn't really hack it. Unless it comes from an oil company or a consultancy wishing to limit any damage to the fossil fuel industries.
