Yes
On my main computer that is :shake:, I'm on my lappy here :)

Weird one this...

Main pc all working fine, all the time. On it last night and all was fine. This morning neither Firefox nor IE will work at all :(

The internet is working fine, as here I'm on my lappy wireless; and even on the main pc other programs that use the internet (MSN, Norton 360 checking for updates) both work fine

It's just that when I click on my Firefox shortcut I get the hourglass for a few seconds then nothing. Same with IE

I have of course rebooted it a few times to no avail

Any ideas???

Oh - and while I may know what I'm doing with a camera, I am a complete numpty with computers other than how to use them when they work !!!

Off out for a few hours now, so hope to get a "You're stupid, just do this and all will be fine" sort of message on my return - fingers Xd anyway

Cheers

DD

The problem on your PC is NOT the internet. If your clicking the icons and they dont load then its soemhting internal.. Even if you ahve no internet available at all firefox and IE should still load

Try other programs that are big but not internet. have you any office software like word or excell

If they dont load either then...

Go into windows explorer...
Find drive C
Right click
click propeties at bottom

check disk space..

oh and most important of all.... good luck :)

It is possible that the apps haven't closed down properly.

Try opening Task Manager (Ctrl+ALt+Delete) and click onto the processes tab, have a scroll through for IEXPLORE & [can't remember but think it's FFOX], highlight them and click end task.

Please do not do this for EXPLORER which is something completely different.

You should then be able to open either app...

he says he has rebooted a few times so i cant see that being the problem..

However a cold boot is probably in order as I am guessing he has done warm boots...

warm boot is resetting your computer.. turning it off and back on at same time

cold boot is turning your computer off and unplugging for 10 seconds... when you turn your pc off there is still internal power for a few seconds so unplugging is reccomended.. turn back on and thats a cold boot

It could be your anti-virus software/firewall may well be blocking them from loading, maybe due to a resent update.

Try starting in Safe Mode (press f8 at start up) and try again.

You can also try checking the proxy settings haven't been altered by a trojan or virus

In firefox
Options>>Advanced>>Network>>Settings
Check in here no proxy is configured

In Internet Explorer
Options>>Connection>Lan Settings
Check in here that no proxy is configured

The OP's problem is that neither of these applications will open ;)

What antivirus and firewall/internet security suite do you have?
It could have been caused by an update, like del69 mentions.

Checking running processes often helps (ctrl+shift+esc, click the processes tab, click a column header to sort them). If they appear among the processes when you try to start them, then you'll know they're there starting at all. If they are, check rules of your firewall/antivirus. You can also try turning off all non-essential programs running on the background - many of them like to sit in the system tray.
You could also try checking the Windows event viewer.

Are you able to start Firefox or IE in Windows' safe mode?

Hi,

You could try clearing the cache in IE/Firefox, reset the security settings to default.

Download the Chrome installer on the lappie, then install on the main PC, see if that bowser works.

Try shutting down your firewall - I have ZoneAlarm and about 3 years ago a microsoft update caused it to stop me getting on the net.

EDIT: Mind you if the apps aren't installing at all you may have to re-install Windows.

Time to back up?

SERIOUSLY GUYS!! The programs arnt even loading so the problem cant be anything to do with the internet... even if you all turn off your internet and unplug your routers... IE and firefox will still load up and run.. he says his doesn't..thus problem cant possibly be the internet ..

Could it be a problem with Nortons in browser protection crashing? DD try running Internet Explorer in No Add Ons mode (Start>All Programs> Accessories>IE (No Add Ons) and see if that works. If it does it means that one of your plug ins is making it crash so check through 'Manage Add Ons' in IE Tools and disable each one until it works.

HTH

I would agree with smoothedit - it sounds like a dodgy add on, but since it is in IE and Firefox, it is most likely an antivirus addon - I can't think of any other type of addon that would run on both browsers.

Oh and DD if you cant find the IE No Add Ons, just do a Start>Search then type internet explorer. Sometimes the program isnt in the start menu.

Matt

how would that stop the programs from even running ?

:D:D the key is in Dave's line

Oh - and while I may know what I'm doing with a camera, I am a complete numpty with computers other than how to use them when they work !!

when you are working with complete numptys start with the simpliest thing and work towards the more complicated. It could be that the fault has not been correctly described. Panic in complete numpties where computers are concerned comes out in many varied forms :):)

No disrespect intended towards Dave :)

so reverse sillyness you mean ;-)

You will be running around in cirlcles wiht all the above...

STEP ONE
Run a program that isnt internet related and see if that loads up then come back..

Anyone Agree? :)

See my posts above as he has already stated:

He said other programs run fine and even msn (assuming messenger) is working online

EDIT: DOH! too slow

Surely MSN uses IE or firefox?

uses it how? its a separate program with separate connection details..

OOPS - yes forgot!

Must admit then I've never heard of this one - all I can suggest is try un-installing Firefox then try IE and if that doesn't work try downloading Opera and install that.

If that doesn't work - go into the garden get a leafy branch and give it a good thrashing!

Then re-install Windows.

Would just give no add ons a quick try before reinstalling IE and firefox if twas me.

Good luck DD

bit of a coincidence for addons to be effecting both browsers though when they dont actually share any..

i still say do a chkdsk, then unistall the tat that is norton and download something like MS security essentials and do a full system scan. my money is heading towards some malware

Ahh fair doos. Could also be spyware trying to start on each?

When you try and load firefox and nothing happens, have you tried opening task manager and seeing if the process is actually running? I've had this with firefox a couple of times, her to close the process tree down and then reload firefox for it to work.
