HELP - can't access internet

Ok guys - bloody wierd update for you

Back on the main pc - cold boot

Tried Firefox (my default browser) nothing

Went Programs/IE (which hadn't worked before) and dragged a shortcut onto my destop - tried the shortcut & IE opened !!! :eek:

Tried a few websites on it and all worked fine, but it's an old version of IE and it suggested downloading IE8 - did that - installed itself and runs fine

Intrigued - I tried Firefox again - which opened fine and from one of my tabs I'm now here on TP

WTF ??? :cuckoo:

So... errrr... it seems fine now, so thanks (until next time!!!) :thumbs:

I know it makes no sense - made no sense either how they both stopped

Thinking about a looooooooong rant about the biggest downside of digital photography being computers !!!

In nearly 30 years of film use I never once had a film cassette or printer say "Can't be arsed today mate" and simply not work :D

Now everything is working fine, I would set a system restore point, just in case things go dodgy again. Goto programs/accessories/system tools/system restore.

I would recommend a registry scan and clean. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the initial issue. There are a few applications available but I would recommend these; PC Tools Regeistry Mechanic or RegCure. If you don't want to fork out any money do a Google for CrapCleaner. Be careful because it can remove important registry keys so use this on your own accord. As for Norton I would get rid of it. I have used PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus for about 5 years now. It is low profile and works very well.
 
Hmmm... Norton

As a numpty on puters I hear this... Norton, best selling biggest, easiest and most recommended to me by others, hence why I bought the Norton 360 recently and (to my knowledge) I have never had a problem with viruses, trojans et al)

Yet, on TP only to be fair, I keep hearing - Norton is crap

So which is it - Norton is great if you know no better, but if you are computer aware it's crap - or what :shrug:

Norton isn't crap, its a huge recourse hog. From my personal experience it has even skipped over some viruses when competitively ran against other offerings.

No insult intended - but us stupid millions buy Norton and I hear relatively few telling me its crap

What real evidence, knowledge is there for saying what may be the world's best known software of its kind is crap or not 'right'???

Happy to believe passed the hype - just confused by it all :bonk:

Computers are weird things, I hate it when clients ask me for a precise explanation as to why it did something (or stopped working), because sometimes, you just can't explain it. Mine is normally as stable as a rock and yet last week it froze twice in the same day - but hasn't done it since! Unexplainable. :clap:

FWIW Norton is not the best software out there. The reason so many people have it on their computers is because it is sold with them, or the salesmen in PC world convince people that they need it. They may come out on top in virus detection tests but in real world performance I have never been pleased with Norton. Clients who have slow/virused computers are more often than not running Norton or McAfee.

I don't even think Microsoft stuff is 'the best' out there but it's so common because of clever Bill Gates' moves in the 80s.

I have used CCleaner for a few years now, and never had any issues with it. Also use Microsoft secutity essentials and you cant even tell when its running a scan, unlike McAffee on my desktop.:eek: I also recommend Winpatrol, this monitors your hnsts file, which when altered can lead to many connection issues regarding the net. You simply cant rely on one security suite IMHO, the above three are freeware and have protected my laptop for the past two years. I think DDs original issue may have been router related, now theres a can of worms:bonk:

I didn't say it was crap. Its a recourse hog which means Norton consumes more of your hardware resources when compared to many of the smaller company counterparts. With this perhaps Norton has earned its reputation as "crap" amongst PC enthusiasts and thus became a more widespread generalization of this program.
 
Have any Norton users tried setting the priority of the scan in task manger, open task manager, goto processes tab find norton and right click, in the box that opens find the "set priority" choose below normal.
